Biography

She was born in a parental estate, in a rich family of landowners and owners of coffee plantations. She studied and felt for the first time a craving for painting in Barcelona , where she came with her parents in her youth. From 1916 she studied sculpture in São Paulo, and then painting and drawing. Too conservative teachers did not satisfy her, and in 1920 she moved to Paris , entered the Julian Academy . In 1922 she participated in a group exhibition in Paris.

Returning to São Paulo in 1922, she became close friends with Brazilian writers and modern artists - Anita Malfatti , Mario de Andrade , Osvald de Andrade , Menotti del Picchia . They formed the Five group, which became the center and driving force of Brazilian modernism.

In 1923, the artist briefly returned to Paris, taking lessons from Albert Gleize , Andre Lot , Fernand Leger . The interest of her French teachers in archaic and primitivism prompted the artist to turn to Brazilian folk traditions.

Upon returning to her homeland, she and Oswald de Andrade traveled a lot in Brazil, studying local traditions and folk crafts. Illustrated books by Andrade. In 1926 they got married. Spouses traveled to Europe and the Middle East. In the same 1926, the first solo exhibition was held at Tarsila do Amaral in the Paris gallery of Persie. She became close to the surrealists . Together with her husband, she developed a peculiar philosophy of anthropophagy — an understanding of Brazil as a late culture that “feeds” on its predecessor cultures, from archaic African-American to the latest European (see Anthropophagic manifesto ). In 1929 , the artist's solo exhibitions were held in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, she participated in collective exhibitions in New York and Paris. In 1930, the marriage of Tarsilo do Amaral and Osvalda de Andrade broke up, and Andrade married the writer and journalist Pugu .

In 1931, the artist visited the USSR , exhibited at the Moscow State Pedagogical Museum in Moscow , and traveled around the country. Returning to her homeland in 1932 , she joined the left forces in their opposition to the dictatorial regime of Jetulio Vargas , including the Constitutionalist Revolution . She was arrested, spent a month in prison. Turned to social topics. Since 1938 she has always lived in Sao Paulo.

Participated in the first biennale in Sao Paulo , in the Venice Biennale ( 1964 )

She was buried at Consolasan Cemetery in Sao Paulo .
