John Carter , feeling a desire to take a break from the courtyard and politics, goes alone to explore the remote regions of Mars. This time, he wanted to look at the ruins of Hortz - the great capital of the Orevar empire, which owned all of Mars from the pole to the pole 500 thousand years ago. Despite the fact that the city is abandoned, it is listed on all maps of Mars.
In one of the squares of the ruined city, Carter unexpectedly meets a white man fighting with green barbarians. Naya Dan Chi (saved by Burroughs Pan Dan Chee ) turns out to be saved - a warrior of Orevars, who continue to live in the Hortz citadel, and keep the secret of their existence. John Carter was sentenced to death by the ruler of Hort, but Nai Dan Chi led the Lord of Mars into the dungeons. Waiting for death, they play Martian chess — Jetan, where the figures reproduce the relatives of John Carter, and the Orevar falls in love in absentia with Llana from Gatol. In the morning, the prisoners decided to explore the dungeons, where they found the living corpse of the great embalmer of antiquity, Lee Um Lo. In his crypt, the inhabitants of the ancient Choir, who have spent hundreds of thousands of years of lethargy, and the granddaughter of Carter Llan of Gatol, the daughter of Tara and Gahan, are found in his crypt. She hid in Hortz from the encroachments of Hin Abtel - the self-styled Lord of Mars - the ruler of the Panars, a Red Martian people living in the Arctic. Seeing the bottom of the dry ocean (the Horz was once a port), the Orevars disintegrate into dust, and Carter, Llana and Naya Dan Chi go to another hemisphere - to Gatol.

On the thirty-seventh day of the expedition to the bottom of the dry ocean, John Carter, Llana and Naya Dan Chi stumble upon a caravan of green barbarians, and are forced to flee. They are seized by the firstborn, the black Martians, and brought to the city of Kamtol, where they are forced to answer questions from a certain Big Machine. Later it turns out that the machine analyzes hundreds of indicators of the nervous system, and writes them into its memory. From now on, no one person is able to leave the limits of Kamtol, since the Machine is able to destroy at a distance any person who has passed through it. The machine was created by order of the tyrant Doxus, the ruler of Kamtol, who longed for absolute control over all its inhabitants. John Carter succeeds in conquering the heart of a tyrant with his art of fencing, but he has to raise a slave uprising: there are coming gladiatorial games to which Turid, the Lord’s sworn enemy (from the novel “The Lord of Mars ”) will be present. John Carter manages to free Llan and destroy the Great Machine.

Disguised as a red Martian, John Carter makes his way to the Panaras, and learns that Hin Abtel has made his vassal the ruler of the yellow Martians - Talu, while he is gathering a huge army and navy to subdue all the peoples of Mars. Since the Arctic is not able to feed a multimillion army, soldiers simply freeze for peacetime. Carter gets to Pankor - the greenhouse capital of Panar, where Hin Abtel boasts of his victory over John Carter himself - the proof is the Master's flyer stolen back in Hortz. John Carter frees Llana and flies to Helium. Presumably (this is not described directly, but John Carter thinks that most likely it is), during the battle with the Panaras, Tan Hadron, the main character of the novel The Great Warrior of Mars , dies captured by them.
"The Invisible People of Mars"
The story is published under the name of English. Invisible Men of Mars in the November 1941 issue of Amazing Stories .
John Carter’s task is to get to Helium as quickly as possible and bring all the power of his fleet to the self-appointed dictator. However, the lack of food forced Vladyka and his granddaughter to land right on the territory of the Forest of Lost People, where they were seized by invisible men. Invisible people turned out to be ordinary people, residents of the town of Invac, who invented a chemical agent that makes a person completely invisible for several hours. John Carter manages to overcome all obstacles, get a means of invisibility, and return to Helium. Thanks to the means of invisibility, Hin Abtel was captured, after which the Lord of Mars went to the Arctic - to thaw millions of Martians. Because of this, he is not present at the wedding of Nai Dan Chi and Llana.
