Gameplay
Single player game
At the beginning of each operation (except for the operation "Neptune"), the player makes a parachute jump and can roughly choose the place of landing. Having landed in a certain place, he gets the opportunity to pick up cartridges and devices for improving weapons. The player can change his weapon, for example, attach an optical sight to an M1 rifle or a drum magazine to a Thompson submachine gun , although these improvements are only available at certain levels. Accordingly, missions can be completed in different ways, depending on where the player gets and what weapons he receives.
Massively Multiplayer Game
The game has five multiplayer game modes:
- All versus all (Deathmatch)
- Team vs other teams (Team Deathmatch)
- Capture the Flag
- King of the Hill
- Hunt (Scavenger Hunt)
Story
The protagonist of the game is Frank Keegan, who serves in the 82nd US Airborne Division. The game has 4 campaigns dedicated to the participation of Keegan in the 4 most important operations of the anti-Hitler coalition in Europe - Husky , Neptune , Market Garden and Varsity .
Reviews and Criticism
The vast majority of gaming sites and magazines rated Vanguard medium or low. The IGN website gave the Wii version 7 out of 10 possible points, although the PS2 version got 7.2 points [1] . The GameSpot website rated both versions 5.5 out of 10 points [2] . The game was especially criticized for the weak engine, poor conditions for the simultaneous game of several people and weak AI opponents . Critics also pointed out that many elements of the game have already appeared in a series or other shooters on the theme of World War II (the exception was the ability to jump with a parachute). Aaron Thomas, a reviewer from the GameSpot website, said that he saw no reason “to buy the game for PS2, and because of the increased prices for the Wii-version there is no need to take it” [2] . The British site Mansized.co.uk put Vanguard only 2 points out of 5, saying that the game is “pretty shocking” [3] . The official PS2 magazine in the UK rated the game at 5 points out of 10 and called it “The weakest game in the Medal of Honor series. It is nothing but a Call of Duty for the poor. ” [4]
