Youth

Eldar Ryazanov.
1941 year

Eldar Ryazanov was born in Samara, his mother’s hometown, in a mixed Russian-Jewish family of workers of the Soviet trade mission in Tehran, Alexander Semyonovich Ryazanov and Sofya Mikhailovna (nee Shusterman), in a house on 120 Frunze Street [1] [2] .

Soon, parents moved to Moscow, where his father worked as the chief of the wine department [3] . In 1930, the family broke up, and the future filmmaker from the age of seven was brought up by his mother and stepfather, engineer Lev Mikhailovich Kopp, a widower who treated Eldar as his own son [4] [5] .

From childhood he loved literature, wanted to become a writer, dreamed of traveling. After the end of the decade, he even sent a letter of application to the Odessa Naval College .

First works

In 1950 he graduated with honors from VGIK (workshop of Grigory Kozintsev ). His thesis was the documentary "They're Studying in Moscow", shot together with classmate Zoya Fomina. For five years he worked in documentary films at the Central Documentary Film Studio . He shot scenes for the film magazines Pioneria , Soviet Sport , and News of the Day , and edited several editions in its entirety. He also shot film essays "October Road" (with Leah Derbysheva, 1951), "At the World Chess Championship" (1951), " Sakhalin Island " (with Vasily Katanyan , 1954) and others. [6]

Since 1955, he worked as the director of the Mosfilm film studio. Together with Sergei Gurov, he directed the first Soviet widescreen film-review “ Spring Voices ”, in which there were also game episodes. And a year later, the director of the film studio Ivan Pyryev literally forced him to take up the comedy film.

The film " Carnival Night " (1956) was a huge success. The famous actor Igor Ilyinsky played one of his best roles in the film - the bureaucrat Ogurtsov , and the young actors Lyudmila Gurchenko and Yuri Belov suddenly became movie stars.

In the next few years, he directed the lyrical comedy The Girl Without an Address (1957), the heroic comedy The Hussar Ballad (1962), the everyday comedy Give the Complaint Book (1964), the eccentric comedy The Incredible Adventures of Italians in Russia (1973). And in 1961 he shot two satirical tapes: “ How Robinson was created ” (based on the eponymous short story by Ilf and Petrov , short story in the comedy almanac “ Seriously Serious ”) and “ A Man from Nowhere ” (1961, almost never went to the box office due to a censorship ban) . Sergey Yursky and Anatoly Papanov spoke in The Man from Nowhere.

Pyryev again greatly assisted the filmmaker in creating the film “The Hussar Ballad ”, who obtained permission for the production and persuaded him to act as Lieutenant Rzhevsky Yuri Yakovlev . The filmmaker himself had to make great efforts to convince the film industry that Ilyinsky was the best candidate for the role of Kutuzov , that the film does not distort Russian history, but romanticizes it. Alexander Gladkov ’s play “ Once Upon a Time ”, which served as the dramatic basis for the film, he shortened, at the same time he had to write several poetic episodes.

Major directorial work

There is an opinion that one of his best paintings is “ Watch Out for the Car ” ( 1966 ). Despite the fact that the film was based on a city joke about a noble car thief, it clearly spells out all life conflicts, characters and dialogues. The widest audience was attracted by the further work of the filmmaker:

    The films “ Garage ” and “ On the poor hussar put a word ” (television movie) summed up a certain feature in the work of the filmmaker: both films are sharply critical of Soviet reality.

    Not all plans were implemented. In the late 1960s, Ryazanov planned to make a film about Cyrano de Bergerac based on the heroic comedy of Edmond Rostand and the likeness of his "Hussar Ballad." Having tested the leading role of many popular actors (Andrei Mironov, Oleg Efremov , Sergey Yursky, Vladimir Vysotsky and others), the director eventually approved Evgeny Yevtushenko . He successfully passed the screenings, but higher authorities closed the project due to the social activities of the famous poet [13] .

    Late Period

    In the 1980-1990s, Ryazanov worked as intensively as before. He was a co-author of many of his scripts, wrote several plays, published a number of books. In the 1980s, the director had his own film production of the novel by Mikhail Bulgakov, “The Master and Margarita,” for which senior officials in ideology did not give permission [14] .

    In 1979-1985 he worked as the host of the TV show “ Kinopanorama ” [15] . In addition, he created more than 200 copyright television programs. The most popular television cycles were: “Eight Girls, One Me”, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”, “Talking in the Fresh Air”, “Talking about the Weirdness of Love” (series of programs about prominent people), “Paris Secrets of Eldar Ryazanov” ( ORT ) (in the framework of which Ryazanov’s interview with Jean Mare , Bridget Bardot , Pierre Richard , Roman Polanski and Patricia Kaas came out).

    He was a member and (from 1988 - 1990 ) the secretary of the Union of Cinematographers of the USSR under the first secretary, Andrei Smirnov . He taught at the Higher Courses of Scriptwriters and Directors . Among his students are directors Yuri Mamin , Ivan Dykhovichny , Eugene Tsymbal , Isaac Friedberg .

    He was a member of the jury in the final game of the Major League of KVN 1987 .

    In 1993, the author’s program “Eldar Ryazanov’s Male Conversation with Boris Yeltsin ” [16] was released and televised, during which the president answered the filmmaker’s sensitive questions [17] . The broadcast took place on the “ Ostankino Channel 1 ”, REN-TV [18] [19] was engaged in production. The second show took place on April 25, 2007 on the REN TV channel and was timed to coincide with the funeral of Yeltsin .

    In 2002, Ryazanov became president of the Nika Russian Academy of Motion Picture Arts.

    On January 23, 2005, the cinema club (now the cinema club museum) Eldar was opened, conceived, in the words of the director himself, as a kind of center for Russian comedy [20] . In three rooms, the largest of which is designed for more than five hundred seats, films and performances are held, creative meetings, concerts are held [21] [22] .

    He was a member of the Union of Cinematographers of Russia . In 2010, he became one of the founders of the KinoSoyuz [23] .

    Public position

    In 1989 He was nominated as a candidate for people's deputies of the USSR from the Gagarin constituency of Moscow (Ramenki, Solntsevo, Peredelkino). He passed through one constituency with Yury Chernichenko and several other candidates. I could not guarantee the voters that a metro line would be drawn in Solntsevo and called on my supporters to vote for Chernichenko, who, as a result, won the election in the district.

    On the night of October 3–4, 1993, speaking on RTR , Ryazanov condemned the decision of the Constitutional Court to lift the ban on the activities of the primary organizations of the Communist Party of the RSFSR (Communist Party) and called the supporters of the Supreme Council “bastards” [24] .

    In January 1996, he was among cultural and scientific figures who called on the Russian authorities to stop the war in Chechnya and move on to the negotiation process [25] . In March-June of the same year, together with his friend Zinovy ​​Gerdt and the parodist Alexander Ivanov, he actively campaigned for the election of Boris Yeltsin as president of Russia for a second term.

    In an interview with Ekho Moskvy radio station in 2011, the director gave a mostly positive assessment of the activities and personality of Boris Yeltsin , and the ex-president’s biggest mistake was the appointment of Vladimir Putin as his successor [26] . In the same year, together with other cultural figures and human rights activists, he signed an open letter demanding that the “anti-constitutional ban on registering new parties” be lifted and all political forces in the country allowed to participate in the elections [27] .

    He spoke out against the criminal prosecution of the Yukos Cases [28] and members of the Pussy Riot group [29] . He called on Muscovites to take part in protests against Federal Law No. 272 (the so-called "Dima Yakovlev Law"), which prohibited the adoption of Russian children by US citizens [30] . In March 2014, among other filmmakers, he signed an open letter published by KinoSoyuz condemning “ Russian military intervention in Ukraine ” and “an unprecedented anti-Ukrainian campaign unleashed by Russian state channels” [31] . He also supported the congress of the intelligentsia congress “Against the war, against the self-isolation of Russia, against the restoration of totalitarianism” in Moscow and signed a congressional appeal that supported the annexation of Crimea to Russia . [32] The name and surname of the director were included in the so-called “white list” of cultural and art workers from different countries who supported the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the country [33] .

    Over the years, he has consistently advocated the defense of animals [34] : for the adoption of the relevant federal law [35] , the investigation of the facts of ill-treatment [36] , the creation of circuses without numbers with training [37] . He supported the candidacy of environmental activist Evgenia Chirikova in the 2012 mayoral election of Khimki [38] .

    In 2010 and 2011 he underwent heart surgery and has since been hospitalized more than once [39] . At the end of 2014, doctors diagnosed the director with an acute violation of cerebral circulation, and in early August of the following year he suffered a heart attack, which, according to media reports, led to pulmonary edema [39] [40] .

    On October 6, 2015, the director was hospitalized in the intensive care unit of the Moscow City Clinical Hospital No. 1 named after N. I. Pirogov [41] . He celebrated his birthday on November 18 at home. On November 21, the director was again hospitalized [39] .

    Eldar Ryazanov died in a Moscow hospital on the night of November 29-30, 2015 from acute heart failure [42] [43] [44] .

    Farewell to the director took place on December 3 at the Central House of Writers [45] . On the same day he was buried in the Novodevichy cemetery [46] .

    Father - Alexander Semenovich Ryazanov (1898-1960) [47] , a native of the Nizhny Novgorod province , a participant in the Civil War , in 1921 - head of the land sector of the registration department of the Field Headquarters of the Republican Revolutionary Army [48] .
