Biography
Henry Oliver Hansen was born in Boston ( Massachusetts ) on December 14, 1919. In addition to him, his family had one sister and three brothers. In 1938, he graduated from high school in Somerville. At the age of 18, he enlisted in the Marine Corps.
In the rank of sergeant, he took part in the battle for Iwo Jima , was among six American troops who raised their first flag on Mount Suribati on February 23, 1945, photographed by Louis Lowery . [1] On the same day, another group replaced this flag with another one of a larger size, raising the second flag captured in a photograph of Joe Rosenthal, whose picture quickly became known. Seven days after raising the flag, Hansen was killed in action.
After the battle, there were different opinions about who was depicted at the base of the flagpole in Rosenthal's photograph. Rene Gagnon and John Bradley first identified Hansen in this man. However, after a year and a half, an investigation by the US Congress showed that that person was not Hanson, but Harlon Block , which was confirmed by one of the people in the photo - Ira, Haze .
