Biography

Saint Julian was born to Jewish parents in Toledo ( Spain ), but who converted to Christianity [1] . He studied at the cathedral school, was a monk , later an abbot in Agali. His spiritual teacher was Saint Eugene II of Toledo . On January 29, 680, Julian succeeded Archbishop Kvirik in the Toledo Diocese . He was the first Archbishop of the Westgoth kingdom , who had power over all other hierarchs of the Iberian Peninsula with the right to ordain bishops to vacant departments. In this position, in 680 he assisted King Ervig in overthrowing King Wamba , and also took steps to centralize the administration of the Church of the Vestgothy State in the hands of the Archbishop of Toledo. The position of Julian as head of the Church of the West Gothic kingdom created great inconvenience for the royal clergy, and his views on the doctrine of the Trinity caused concern to the Holy See .

Saint Julian of Toledo presided over several cathedrals and synods and corrected the Mozarabic liturgy . He was a prolific ecclesiastical writer: among his works are Insultatio vilis storici in tyrannidem Galliae (“Speech with Censure of the tyranny of the Franks” [2] ; 673 year ), Prognostica (The Book of Death), The History of King Wamba [3] and the book about the afterlife ( 687 year ). Despite the temper of a kind and courteous man, Archbishop Julian encouraged the Visigoths kings in the persecution of the Jews . For example, in 681, while presiding over the Twelfth Toledo Cathedral , he forced King Ervig to enact several anti-Jewish laws. At the request of Ervig, Julian wrote De Comprobatione Aetatis Sextae Contra Judaeos in 686 , a work on the Messiah in the Bible and the way to convert Jews to Christianity. Another church synod, the Thirteenth Toledo Cathedral , was held in the autumn of 683.

Saint Julian died in Toledo on March 6, 690. His successor in the Toledo diocese was Archbishop Sisebert .
