Northern Zamboanga ( Sebuano Amihanang Zamboanga, Tagalog. Hilagang Sambuwanga ) - the province of the Philippines on the Zamboanga Peninsula on the island of Mindanao . Physico-geographical characteristics

From the north-west, the province is washed by the Sulu Sea . Among the provinces of the peninsula above, this is the largest.

The area of ​​the province is 6618.0 kmΒ². The average surface height is about 243 m above sea level. The highest point is Mount Dabiak in Katipunan (2600 m). The rugged coastline stretches for 400 km. The relief of the province is flat. The climate of the province is mild, temperate. Precipitation falls evenly throughout the year. Only in the southernmost part is a long dry season manifested.

History

Historically, Northern Zamboanga is associated with two other neighboring provinces mentioned above and with the city of Zamboanga . Together, they constituted one province, and were recently divided. And the city of Zamboanga played the role of the administrative and main economic center in this area until the period of American domination, and some time after the arrival of the Americans.

During the period of Spanish rule, the province was part of the zone of influence of Muslim rulers.

Population

The population is 957,997 inhabitants (2010). The population density is 144.76 people / kmΒ².

The main language of the population is the Sebuano of the Austronesian language family . Chabakano (zabboangi, or zamboangeno), Tagalog and English are common. On a hill, the indigenous language is subanon .

Economics

Half of the province is adapted for agricultural land. Cereals , coconut , rice and root crops are the main crops. There are significant marine and mineral resources . Fisheries are developing, the importance of which is growing every year. Among commercial fish, tuna is the most popular. According to studies by the National Statistical Coordination Forum, North Zamboanga has been recognized as the poorest in the Philippines. The poverty rate was 64% in 2003 compared to 47% in 2000.
