Six minutes after the start of the match, Aston Villa striker Peter McParland pushed with his shoulder the Manchester United goalkeeper Ray Wood . Wood received a fracture of the cheekbone from a stroke and lost consciousness. He was carried away from the field on a stretcher. Since substitutions had not yet been practiced at this time, the fielder was forced to get into the goal. They became Jackie Blanchflower . Seven minutes before the end of the match, Wood was able to return to the goal, but by that time United had already conceded two goals.
Aston Villa won its seventh FA Cup, which at that time was a record achievement. Since then, Villa no longer won this tournament and lost the record for the highest number of FA Cup wins to other clubs, including Manchester United, the current record holder of the tournament with 11 wins.
In December 2007, BBC Four edited a documentary called A Game of Two Eras , in which the 1957 FA Cup final was compared to the 2007 final [1] .
