It is the highest point of the North Island of New Zealand with a height of 2797 meters. Located 23 km north-east of the city of Ohakune and 40 km south-west of the southern shore of Lake Taupo . It has three main peaks - Tahurangi ( Maori Tahurangi ; 2,797 meters), Te Heuheu ( Maori Te Heuheu ; 2,755 meters) and Paretataitonga ( Maori Paretetaitonga ; 2,751 meters). The active crater is located between these peaks.
The slopes of the volcano Ruapehu covered with forests . Above 1,700–2,000 m there are snows and glaciers . The last eruption occurred on September 25, 2007 .
