Biography

Origin

According to medieval Welsh genealogies, Wortimer, called in them Gwertevir ap Gurteyrnom, was the son of Vortigern and his wife Severa, daughter of Magna Maxim . Thus, the origin of Vortimer was elevated to one of the Roman emperors [1] .

In narrative sources

According to Nenny [2] and Galfried of Monmouth [3] who followed him in his account of events, Wortimer, after the Saxons seized the southeastern regions of Britain, overthrew his father. Perhaps this happened in 447 [4] . During the war, the British under the command of Wortimer defeated the Saxons in four battles. First, victory was won in the battle on the Dergventida River (modern Derwent ), and in 455 [5] - at the ford of Episford (or Ritergabyle), where the brother of Wortimer, Kategirn , and the king of Kent Horse fell. In 457, on the banks of the English Channel, Wortimer managed to defeat the Saxons again and force them to flee, according to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle , to London [6] , and according to Galfried of Monmouth, to the island of Thanet . Shortly afterwards, Wortimer was poisoned by his stepmother Ronuen, daughter of Hengist .

In Welsh genealogies

Vortimer’s daughter, Anna , became the wife of Kineer , ruler of the castle of Kaer-Kineer [7] . They had many children, including Nonna . Nonna is the mother of St. David . According to the genealogy of Bonedd yr Arwyr [8] , Saint Anna was the daughter of Uther Pendragon and Eigir (Igrein), daughter of Amlaud Wledig . Thus, Wortimer might have been one of Uther’s prototypes and could have had a wife, Igrain.

Family

  • The wife is unknown. From her three daughters: [9]
