Argentina was the hostess of the world championship for the second time - for the first time the strongest national teams played here in 1982 . The Brazilian national team, who lost the USSR team in the final of the X World Championship in the Luna Park Buenos Aires Sports Palace, took revenge 20 years later in the same hall from her successor, the Russian national team . On the way to the first world title in history, the Brazilians also defeated other strongest teams of the late XX - early XXI centuries: the Italian national team won the quarterfinals, the Sydney 2000 Olympic champions and the Yugoslav volleyball champions in the semifinals.
The highest achievement in its history was also achieved by the French team , which became the bronze medalist of the championship. The holder of the most prestigious individual awards - the most valuable and most productive player - became the captain of the Argentine national team Marcos Milinkovich .
72 matches of the final part of the World Cup were attended by more than 330,000 spectators.
Qualifying games
The national teams of Argentina as a team of the host country and Italy as the winner of the previous World Cup were exempted from the qualifying tournament. For the remaining 22 tickets national teams from 61 countries of the world fought. The draw for the final stage of the World Cup was held on October 5, 2001 in Buenos Aires .

Interesting Facts
- In addition to the winners of the championship, the Portuguese national team, which took the 8th place, achieved the highest achievement at the world championships. Before that, the Portuguese only once played in the final tournament of the world championships - in Paris-1956 , where they were classified by 15. The Portuguese team was led to success by Cuban coach Juan Diaz. His compatriots, by contrast, performed in Argentina as never before: after the “bronze” of the previous world championship , obtained, incidentally, under the leadership of Diaz, the Cuban team this time shared the last place with six teams. The reason for the inexpressive performance of the Cubans was the fact that at the end of 2001 six volleyball players left their location, having fled to Italy .
- The oldest players in the championship were Italy's connecting team Ferdinando De Georgi , who celebrated his 41st birthday during the competition, and Hugo Conte , the 39-year-old Argentina central blocking team. For both volleyball players, this championship was the fourth in his career, with Conte first performing at the 1982 world championship - then the Argentine national team (also playing at home) became a bronze medalist. One of Conte’s partners in that team was Carlos Getselevich, who also came to the 2002 World Cup, but already as the head coach of the Argentine team.
- A lot of adventures fell to the Russian team . Having lost the Greek national team to the qualifying tournament in Bursa , the Russians got to the World Cup only due to the best ratio of the parties among the seven teams, who also took second places in the qualifying groups [3] . In Argentina, Shipulin's wards almost confirmed the “coincidence” of presence among the 24 strongest teams in the world, having lost two games in a row at the start. In order to leave the group, on the final day of the first group stage, the Russians needed to beat Tunisia in three sets and hope for the “dry” victories of Italy over Canada and the USA over Venezuela. Italians and Americans played exactly as Russia needed, but the Russians themselves almost missed the third set in the game with the Africans - Tunisia scored 20:18, and if not for Andrei Yegorchev , who closed the opponent’s attack block three times in a row, the national team Russia would probably go home [4] .
- Instead of this misfortune, an almost mischievous misfortune almost followed. The plane, on which the Russians flew to Cordoba , where the matches of the second group stage were to be held, fell into the turbulence zone. As it turned out later, the air traffic controller, who received a message about adverse weather conditions, was not supposed to release the liner from Buenos Aires airport at all. Fortunately, nothing happened. Subsequently, the Russian team held several difficult matches and reached the finals, where they lost to Brazil. Barcelona's 1992 Olympic champion Giovane, who brought his team 15th point in the fifth decisive game directly from the pitch, put an end to this interesting championship [5] .
