Biography
Born February 3, 1939 (according to other sources, November 16, 1943) in New York. He graduated from Yale University , after which he worked in television advertising. He began his career in cinema with writing scripts (a fantastic film “ Silent Run ” by Douglas Trumbull ). His first notable work was the film “ Stormbreaker and the Quick-Foot ” (1974), in which Clint Eastwood played.
Four years later, Cimino made a film about the Vietnam War “ Deer Hunter ”, which became his biggest success. Robert De Niro and Christopher Walken played in the film. The Deer Hunter received five Oscars (including nominations for the best film and best directing), and Cimino himself was given the financial opportunity by United Artists to start work on the next film, which became the gateway to Paradise .
However, the painting " The Gates of Paradise " (1981) with a very large budget at that time of $ 40 million suffered a catastrophic failure. This led to the bankruptcy of United Artists and seriously damaged the reputation of Cimino.
In the 1980s, the director staged the action movie Year of the Dragon (1985) with Mickey Rourke in the title role and Sicilian (1987) based on the novel by Mario Puzo , where Christopher Lambert played. In 1990, a remake of William Wyler ’s film of the same name, “ Hours of Despair, ” starring Mickey Rourke and Anthony Hopkins, was released . In 1996, the director shot the action-packed drama "The Catcher of the Sun. "
In 2007, the short film Cimino “Translation is not required” became part of the movie almanac “ Everyone has his own movie .”
He died on July 2, 2016 at the 78th year of his life at home, surrounded by loved ones.
