Biography

Early years

John Brion was born in Glen Ridge, New Jersey. His parents were musicians: his mother was a jazz singer, his father was the conductor of the orchestra at the University of Yale, and his brother and sister became a respected composer and arranger. Bryon had some difficulties at Hamden, and at the age of seventeen he abandoned his studies, focusing on professional music classes.

The Bats

In the early eighties, Brion and the musician, as well as the producer, Bill Murphy began their collaboration in the city of New Haven, Connecticut. Quite by chance, they met bassist Don "Riff" Fertman, and together founded The Bats (not to be confused with the New Zealand band of the same name). The Bats released the single "Popgun" and one album, "How Pop Can You Get?" On 1982 Gustav Records. The works were favorably received by critics, but did not have commercial success, and in the end, the trio broke up.

Participation in other groups

in 1987, Brion moved to Boston, where he played solo, founded the short-lived band World's Fair, and became a member of the band 'Til The Grays. Brian played a variety of instruments for Sam Phillips' Omnipop album, which was released in 1996. Bryon also acted as keyboardist and drummer on the recording of the “kissin 'Time” album by Marianne Faithful, which was released in 2003, and in addition, co-wrote the song “City of Quartz” for her next album, “Before the Poison”.

Producing

After Brion became recognizable among hired musicians, he began producing the debut work of his then girlfriend Mann, the album “Whatever”, as well as her second work, “I'm With Stupid”. In addition to these works, Brion was engaged in producing albums for Fiona Apple, Rufus Winewright, Eleni Mandell, Ratt Miller, Robin Hitchcock and Evan Dando.

Brion was also a co-producer for Kanye West's Late Registration album in 2005.

In the fall of 2002, Brion began work on the album “Extraordinary Machine” together with Fiona Apple, but subsequently she connected Mike Elizondo and Brian Keghu, a friend of Brion, to complete the album. Versions of the songs that Brion dealt with later leaked to the Internet, and as a result, a kind of cult gathered around the album long before its release.

Brion also worked on Sean Lennon's Friendly Fire album, some of which he performed. Lennon said that working with him was “like I was working with Prince. It’s the same thing that they painted some strange alien sign in your room. ”

A little later, Brion joined the work on the albums of the British pop artists Daido, Spoon and Keane, and also, in 2009, took part in the work of Of Montreal by Jon Brion Remix EP.

Meaningless

Brion signed to Lava / Atlantic in 1997, but terminated it after switching to work on his debut solo album, Meaningless; the album was independently released in 2001.

Rumor has it that Brion is working on his second full-length album at Abbey Road Studios.

Movie Soundtracks

Brion noted that to work on film music, he used the first samples of analog sample technology to create simulations of certain instruments close to the real sound.

Brion was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack Album for his work on the 1999 film Magnolia and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind in 2004.

At the last moment, Brion was hired to write episodic music for the film " American Divorce ." He also recorded music and prepared originals for the films Crackers of Hearts , Love Knocking Down , Step Brothers and New York, New York . He also recorded live accompaniment for musical commentary on the DVD version of The Step Brothers

Personal life

Bryon met with comedian Mary Lynn Rajskub for five years, but in the fall of 2002, they broke up.
