Carter's work was completely different from the soul performed by other artists in the same years. Mel Carter began recording on SAR in the early sixties, and commercial success came to him in the middle of the decade with Imperial Records . At that time he recorded pop ballads of average popularity. His biggest success was the 10th place on the Billboard Hot 100 with the hit "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me" (1965), a composition that preceded the rock era. The first hit of Mel Cartrera was the song " When a Boy Falls in Love " recorded at 19 years old in 1962. His other famous songs include Band of Gold and All of a Sudden My Heart Sings.
But “ Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me ” is a song that Carter is remembered for decades later. So, for example, it is performed in the film " We were soldiers ."
Later Carter as an artist participated in several television programs.
