Lucid, Shannon

Shannon Matilda Wells Lucid ( born Shannon Matilda Wells Lucid ; born January 14, 1943 , Shanghai , China ) - an American woman astronaut and biochemist. She performed 5 space flights, including a record flight for women at the Mir station for 188 days (March - September 1996). For this flight was awarded the highest award for astronauts - the Space Medal of Honor of Congress (the only woman awarded in vivo). She also owns three consecutive world records: the first woman to complete the 3rd, 4th, and then 5th flights. The last record is still valid today, five more astronauts repeated it, but none has yet surpassed it.

Biography

Lucid was born in Shanghai , China , in a family of American Baptist missionaries. Her parents (Oscar and Myrtle Wells) hail from Bethany , Oklahoma . In infancy, she was interned with them in a Japanese camp. Lucid studied at the University of Oklahoma , where she received a degree in biochemistry (Ph.D., biochemistry) in 1973.

Married to Michael F. Lucid ( Indianapolis ), they have two daughters and a son, as well as 5 granddaughters.

Career at NASA

 

In 1978 he was selected to a NASA astronaut detachment. She was the only one of the six female candidates who at that time was a mother.

In 2002—2003 served as the head of the NASA science department. Later, she was a CAPCOM specialist (capsule communicator, Earth responsible astronaut, who provides immediate advice to the orbital team via direct communication in the STS-114 missions in 2005, STS-116 in 2006, STS-118 and STS-120 in 2007 , STS-122 , STS-124 and STS-126 in 2008, STS-125 and STS-127 in 2009.

Spaceflight

  • in 1985, she made her first space flight on the Discovery shuttle using the STS-51G program . Then she flew as a mission specialist on STS-34 in 1989, STS-43 in 1991, and STS-58 in 1993.
  • In 1996, she made a record-breaking flight duration for women to the Mir station (188 days, including 179 days aboard the Russian station). The flight to it was carried out on the Atlantis shuttle during the STS-76 and STS-79 flights. During this time, conducted numerous medical and physical experiments. Awards

  • The Congressional Space Medal of Honor was awarded the Space Medal of Honor in December 1996, becoming the 10th man and the 1st woman to receive this award.
  • Introduced into the Oklahoma Women's Hall of Fame ( Oklahoma Women's Hall of Fame ) in 1993. [6]
