History

In 1886, the Upper City Park in New Orleans ( Louisiana ) was renamed Audubon Park by the local authorities and the first local Audubon society was created. Its creators were scientists Florence Bailey, George Grinnel and Fanny Hardy Extorm [1] .

At the federal level, society was formed in 1905 - thus, it is one of the oldest conservation associations in the world. It got its name in honor of John James Audubon, 1785-1851, the famous American naturalist, ornithologist and animal painter who published the outstanding work "Birds of America" (1827-1838).

The company publishes an illustrated, popular magazine , Audubon , dedicated to nature conservation. It has numerous local networks, reserves and branches that are engaged in bird watching and protecting the local environment. In this, it was very different from the existing American Ornithologists' Union , whose members mainly hunted birds for scientific collections.

Society: 41 thousand members in 1963, 142 thousand in 1970, 300 thousand in 1978 (Hay et McConnell, 1979: 460).

The Company has branches, reserves and resource centers in all 50 US states. More details here .
