Creativity
A skillful draftsman of a routine and academic direction, cold in his compositions and an unimportant colorist, Shamshin was engaged almost exclusively in church painting. His images and wall paintings are in many St. Petersburg churches: in St. Isaac's Cathedral , in the church of St. Myronius of the Life Jaeger Regiment, the Annunciation Life Guards Horse Regiment of the Church, the Greek Embassy, ββPavlovsk Institute, University, Engineering School, Post Office ("Vision of St. Constantine" ), as well as in the Moscow Cathedral of Christ the Savior (painting on the walls of the chapel of St. Nicholas and a large painting "Presentation of the Lord"), in Gatchina city's cathedral, in Sioni Cathedral in Tbilisi , in the church of St. Peter and Paul at None olaevskom engineering school , in the church of Ivangorod to Narva , Ujazdowski Hospital in Warsaw , Russian Embassy in Athens and some others.
In the Imperial Hermitage they painted the hall of Etruscan vases. Of the few Shamshinβs paintings on subjects from Russian history, only two appeared at public exhibitions: the aforementioned image of an episode from the life of Peter the Great (in 1844 ) and βThe Call of Mikhail Fedorovich to the Kingdomβ (in 1876 ).
| Peter Mikhailovich Shamshin (future rector) was a tall, important, slow-moving old man of a senatorial appearance, shaved, tightly fastened, and correct. He approached, or rather, sat down at the drawing on the evening, took a folder from the student and looked at the drawing and the sitter for a long time. Then slowly, a little in the nose, he said, almost the same thing to everyone: "Yes, sir, please see, we have an ankle in place." He straightened his ankle and continued: βYes, nowadays, please, see the late Karl Pavlovich Bryullov said ...β etc. After sitting around the drawing for about ten minutes, I went on to the next with more or less homogeneous speeches. Shamshin was a conscientious, but not talented person, who was late for many years with his artistic views and methods. | ||||
