Short Biography
He graduated from the 6th Tiflis Gymnasium in 1919. In high school years corresponded with the famous Egyptologist academician B. A. Turaev . In 1920-1922 he studied at the Polytechnic Institute in Tiflis . He was drafted into the Red Army and served there until 1924. Then he served in the merchant fleet. In 1929 he joined the ranks of the Communist Party .
In 1934 he graduated from the correspondence historical faculty of Azerbaijan University . In 1935 he was invited by academician V.V. Struve to research at the Institute of Oriental Studies . He defended his thesis "Slavery in Egypt in the XVI Dynasty" (1939); in 1943 - doctoral dissertation “Letter and language of ancient Egypt. (Experience of cultural and historical research). ” Since 1943 - scientific secretary of the Institute of History of the USSR Academy of Sciences in Moscow, since 1944 - professor.
In 1944 he was sent to Egypt as a correspondent of TASS and a representative of the USSR Academy of Sciences in the humanities. For trying to escape to England, he was arrested on August 19, 1947 and taken to the USSR; May 29, 1948 convicted under Art. 58-1a of the Criminal Code of the RSFSR for 25 years of forced labor camps. He was prematurely released after a review of the case (January 20, 1955). He worked as a senior research fellow at the Institute of Economics of the USSR Academy of Sciences (Moscow); Since 1965, he headed the department of the Ancient East. Since 1974 - full member of the USSR Academy of Sciences in the Department of History (History of the Foreign East). Honorary member of the French Egyptological Society and the Egyptological Institute in Prague.
