A Brief History and Activity

The POUS was founded in 1976 at the initiative of MPs from the Portuguese Socialist Party (PSP), Antonio Aires Rodrigues and Carmelinda Pereira . Originally called the Organization of the Fourth International . It took its current name in September 1979 [2] after the union of the Movement for Socialist Unity and the Socialist Organization of Workers [3] . In 1994, the POUS was renamed the Movement for Worker Unity ( MUT ), but in 1999 it assumed its former name [4] . In 2001, the party was led by Aniceto Barbosa.

The party favors Portugal's withdrawal from the European Union and a ban on dismissal. Enjoys little voter support. In the parliamentary elections in 2005, the party received 0.10% of the vote [5] . In the European Parliament elections in 2009, the POUS received 5,101 votes, and 0.14% [6] , which is more than in the elections in 2004 , when it collected 4,275 votes (0.13%) [5] . In the elections to the European Parliament in 2014, she took last place.
