After the anti-German coup in Italy , in early September 1943, her troops left the Dodecanese archipelago, which belonged to her even before the war. Great Britain decided to capture the islands in order to use them as a base for an attack on the Balkan Peninsula . The Allied forces managed to capture most of the islands by the middle of the month, but the Germans occupied Rhodes . In the next 2 months, the struggle for the archipelago continued, in which the Luftwaffe distinguished itself (both air units and paratroopers). The British ground and naval forces suffered heavy losses, the army units were evacuated or surrendered in November. This was one of the last major victories of Germany in the war [1] [2] .
