Chernihiv is known among tourists primarily for its sights of the times of Kievan Rus and the Chernigov Principality . To date, six monuments of the pre-Mongol era have been preserved in Chernihiv:
- Transfiguration Cathedral (mid-11th century),
- Assumption Cathedral of the Yelets Monastery (mid-11th century),
- Anthony Caves (11th – 17th centuries)
- Elias Church (XII century.)
- Borisoglebsky Cathedral (mid-13th century)
- Pyatnitskaya church (mid XII century)
The Transfiguration Cathedral of the 11th century is considered the oldest stone church in the territory of the former Kievan Rus, which later became the tomb of the Chernigov princes. Outstanding Orthodox hierarchs: Lazarus (Baranovich) , Theodosius of Chernigov and Feofil (Ignatovich) were buried in the Borisoglebsky Cathedral of the 12th century. Also in Chernigov there are unique Anthony caves , which were excavated by the Monk Anthony , the founder of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra .
Also, the city is rich in monuments of the Cossacks of Ukrainian Baroque, when the temple construction in Chernihiv acquired a new breath. These include the Catherine’s Church , the Resurrection Church, and the church’s tomb of the Cossack colonels Lizogubov, who, along with the hetman Ivan Mazepa, were the main Orthodox church builders in the Chernihiv region.
During the communist regime, Chernigov was lucky - this is one of the few cities that managed to preserve all the ancient temples. [one]
