Theater History
The first theatrical performances took place in Kragujevac in 1825 .
In 1830-33, Serbia became an autonomous principality and received the right to the activities of cultural, educational and medical institutions. Due to the fact that Kragujevac at that time became the capital of Serbia, the residence of Prince Milos Obrenovic was located here, it was in Kragujevac in the 30s of the XIX century that a printing house, newspaper, gymnasium, lyceum, library, art gallery, court, hospital and first pharmacy.
At the invitation of Prince Milos Obrenovic in the fall of 1834, the famous theater figure Joakim Vujic , “the father of the Serbian theater”, arrived in Kragujevac in order to organize the first permanent theater.
The first performances were held during the session of the Serbian assembly , February 15, 1835 [1] . Vuyich became the first director and director of the theater. A pleiad of artists worked on the performances, which left a deep mark in the history of theatrical art of the country.
In 1836, the theater stopped productions, its activity was resumed in 1840, Atanasie Nikolic became the director. A year later, when Belgrade became the capital of the country, the director and a significant part of the troupe moved to Belgrade, where they took part in the creation of the Theater at Customs. In Kragujevac itself, theatrical life resumed in the middle of the century, the theater became known as the Volunteer Theater. Subsequently, he repeatedly changed the name, since 1965 he bore the name of his founder Joakim Vujic. On February 14, 2007, the assembly of Kragujevac decided to return to the theater its original name, the Princely Serbian Theater.
The Princely Serbian Theater, which has had its historical name since 2007, has been located in the building of the former printing house, adapted at one time to the needs of the theater, for many years. In the walls of the theater at different periods of its history, many outstanding creative personalities worked, which had a huge impact on the development of the national Serbian theater.
