Biography

Born in the family of a paramedic.

In 1941, he graduated from high school with a gold medal.

At 16, he asked for a volunteer in the army and after the first year of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of the University of Saratov he was sent to the school of the younger commanders of the NKVD . Member of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 in various parts of these troops. In 1946, he was discharged and restored at the university. Along with studying at the university, he entered the All-Union Correspondence Law Institute in order to obtain a law degree and be able to get a job if circumstances do not allow graduation.

In 1950 he graduated from the Physics and Mathematics Department of Saratov State University. N. G. Chernyshevsky.

At the university, I received an offer to go to graduate school, however, as he later recalled: “As soon as I had passed the entrance exams, they called me to the dean’s office and informed me that I had come to the attention of a special commission from Moscow that selected promising graduate physicists for distribution along the line of the First Main Directorate , which was then in charge of the entire nuclear industry ” [1] . In the same 1950, he was sent to work in the design bureau of the Gorky Machine-Building Plant as a design engineer.

Based on the accumulated materials on the centrifugal model of a supersonic compressor under the scientific supervision of M.D. Millionshchikov, he prepared a dissertation for the degree of candidate of technical sciences, which he defended in early 1959. In the same year he was appointed head of the newly formed theoretical division of the Design Bureau. On his initiative, the bureau was equipped with modern computers, which made it possible to create and use in design practice new, more complex programs for calculating nuclear reactors.

In 1967 he was appointed deputy chief designer of OKBM for scientific research. In 1969 - 1997 - Director and General Designer, Experimental Design Bureau of Mechanical Engineering, OKBM , Nizhny Novgorod (now OKBM named after I.I. Afrikantov ). Since 1997 - Scientific Director of OKBM.

In 1979 he was elected a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences in the Department of Mechanics and Control Processes, and in 1990 - a full member of the USSR Academy of Sciences in the Department of Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering and Control Processes.

In 1992-1993 he was president of the Russian Nuclear Society. Honorary Member of the European Nuclear Society. In December 2005, he was elected Chairman of the Global Energy Prize International Award Committee.

He worked at NSTU. R. E. Alekseeva , where he was the supervisor of the Institute of Nuclear Energy and Technical Physics. He also made a significant contribution to the development of the Nizhny Novgorod branch of the Institute of Mechanical Engineering. A.A. Blagonravova RAS .

The author of more than 300 publications on the problems of nuclear power engineering and more than 40 inventions.

Wife - Lyudmila Ivanovna.

He was buried at the Bugrovsky cemetery [3] .

Scientific and production activities

He was involved in the theoretical justification of diffusion machine designs for enriched uranium.

When creating the atomic icebreaker, Lenin (1959) was engaged in substantiating the geometry of the flow part of the main circulation pump (MCP), preparing initial data for the designers, and participated in calculating the actual bearing loads and in the MCP tests themselves. He participated in the development of nuclear power plants (NPP) for the first generation of nuclear submarines (nuclear submarines). Worked on the design of the first large fast neutron power reactor - BN-350 for power supply of the city of Shevchenko (Aktau, Kazakhstan), then - on the BN-350 and BN-600 projects; He proposed a number of decisions on the structure and executive bodies of regulation and emergency protection. In 1967, on the basis of these developments, he prepared and defended his doctoral dissertation “Designing of Ship's Nuclear Power Plants”.

Under his scientific leadership, nuclear installations for the icebreakers Sibir, Russia, the Soviet Union, Taimyr, Vaigach, and Yamal were also created; Lighter carrier "Sevmorput", nuclear submarines and surface ships of the Navy.

At the beginning of 1977, together with academician A.P. Aleksandrov, he co-initiated a developed new area of nuclear energy - nuclear boiler plants. Under the scientific leadership of the IAE named after I.V. Kurchatova participated in the creation of a reactor installation for a nuclear power plant (AST); two years later, the design of the atomic boiler plant AST-500 was reviewed and approved. In the 1990s, after socio-political protests, the construction of the lead nuclear power plant in Gorky was stopped, and later in Voronezh.

Among other projects:

  • third-generation high-performance atomic steam generating nuclear submarines in one and two reactor design,
  • KN-3 nuclear steam production unit, used on the Navy’s heavy missile cruisers and in the design of the nuclear carrier,
  • OK-900A and KLT-40 type nuclear reactors of several modifications with standardized equipment,
  • special equipment complexes for reloading nuclear submarines of three generations, cruisers, icebreakers,
  • repair equipment for reactor equipment.
