He graduated from the famous Higher Normal School , then studied at Princeton University in the USA , where he defended his thesis in 1947 under the guidance of O. Zarissky .
Major works in the field of commutative algebra , as well as in its applications to number theory and algebraic geometry . His contribution to the field of pedagogy is also important - the book of Zarissky and Samuel “Commutative Algebra” has become classic and still ( 2009 ) is of great importance.
Samuel is also known for its social activities, especially in the field of ecology . In 1970, he founded the environmental society Survivre et vivre together with A. Grothendieck and C. Chevalley .
