The main rivers are the Neman and its tributaries Svisloch , Salmon , Black Gancha , Kotra .
History
The district was formed on January 15, 1940. In 1940-1944, the district was part of the Bialystok region , September 20, 1944 became part of the Grodno region [6] .
Demographics
The population of the district is 49 803 people, including 11 694 people living in urban conditions (as of January 1, 2018) [2] . In addition to Grodno, on the territory of the district are the city of Skidel , the urban village of Sopotskin , 383 rural settlements, 14 village councils.

Economics
The average monthly nominal accrued salary (before deduction of income tax and certain deductions) in 2017 in the district (without Grodno) amounted to 772.1 rubles. (about 385 dollars). The district took 2nd place in the Grodno region in terms of salary after Grodno (the average salary in the region is 703.2 rubles) and 15th place in the country from 129 districts and cities of regional subordination [10] .

The region has developed agriculture.
The total sown area of crops in the organizations of the district (excluding farms and personal households of the population) in 2017 amounted to 72,220 ha (722 km²) [14] . In 2017, 35 616 ha were sown for grain and leguminous crops (1st place in the region and 3rd place in the Republic of Belarus after Buda-Koshelevsky and Baranovichi ), 5624 hectares for sugar beets (1st place in the region) , under fodder crops - 24 507 ha (1st place in the region) [15] .
The gross harvest of grain and leguminous crops in agricultural organizations amounted to 230.6 thousand tons in 2015, 211.6 thousand tons in 2016, 240.9 thousand tons in 2017. According to the gross grain harvest in 2017, the district took the 1st place in the Republic of Belarus [16] . The average grain yield in 2017 amounted to 67.6 kg / ha (the average in the Grodno region - 39.7 kg / ha, in the Republic of Belarus - 33.3 kg / ha). According to this indicator, the district occupied the 1st place in the Republic of Belarus [17] . The gross harvest of sugar beets in agricultural organizations amounted to 457.2 thousand tons in 2016, 455.8 thousand tons in 2017. According to the gross collection of sugar beets in 2017, the district took 1st place in the Republic of Belarus [18] . The average sugar beet yield in 2017 amounted to 811 kg / ha (the average in the Grodno region - 533 kg / ha, in the Republic of Belarus - 499 kg / ha); according to this indicator, the district took 1st place in the Grodno region [19] .
As of January 1, 2018, the agricultural organizations of the district (excluding farms and personal households of the population) contained 79.1 thousand heads of cattle, including 22.6 thousand cows, as well as 107.8 thousand pigs and 3855, 7 thousand birds. The region takes the 1st place in the Grodno region by the number of cattle, and the 2nd by the number of pigs (after the Shchuchinsky district ) [20] [21] .
In 2017, the region's enterprises produced 95.2 thousand tons of meat (in live weight), 166.2 thousand tons of milk and 175.3 million eggs. The region takes the 1st place in the Grodno region in meat production, and the 1st in milk production. The average milk yield per cow is 7533 kg (the average indicator in the Grodno region is 5325 kg, in the Republic of Belarus - 4989 kg), according to this indicator the district takes the first place in the region [22] [23] .
Transport
The total length of railways in the Grodno region is 672 km. The territory of the region is crossed by the Minsk-Molodechno-Smorgon-Vilnius railway lines, Vilnius-Lida-Baranovichi-Luninets, Molodechno-Lida-Mosty-Grodno, Vilnius-Grodno-Bialystok, Grodno-Volkovysk-Baranovichi, which connect the region with other areas of the state and with neighboring Poland , Lithuania , Ukraine , Russia . Railway junctions are located in the cities of Grodno, Lida, Bridges, Volkovysk.
At the Bruzgi railway station, located near the border with Poland, where the European gauge of 1435 mm is used, coal, crushed stone, timber and large-tonnage containers are reloaded [24] .
The length of paved roads is 6.6 thousand km. The main highways Minsk - Oshmyany - Vilnius , Minsk - Lida - Grodno , Baranovichi-Slonim-Volkovysk-Grodno, Vilnius-Lida-Slonim.
Local navigation is carried out on the rivers Neman and Shchara . The length of the waterways is 521 km.
Branches of the Dashava-Minsk gas pipeline and “Shining of the North” pass through the region: Ivatsevichi-Slonim-Lida-Vilnius, Ivatsevichi - Slonim - Grodno .
Education
In 2017, there were 22 pre-school education institutions in the region (including kindergarten-school complexes) with 1.9 thousand children. In the 2017/2018 academic year, there were 24 institutions of general secondary education in the district, in which 4.7 thousand students studied. The educational process was carried out by 690 teachers. On average, 6.7 students per teacher (the average value in the Grodno region is 7.9, in the Republic of Belarus - 8.7) [25] .
