Known from the Miocene [2] .

Description

Representatives of Momotovs are medium-sized birds with a body length of 16.5–48 cm and a weight of 30–180 g (up to 208 g). Males and females are similar, young birds differ from adults in a dimmer color of plumage. The color of the pritz is bright; green, yellow, orange and brown colors predominate; different species have masks, stripes and black spots; in addition, the color of plumage in many species has a blue and blue color with a metallic luster [2] .

Distribution

Momotovy distributed in Central and South America . Natural habitats are tropical and subtropical forests and light forests. In addition, birds can also live close to humans - in gardens and plantations. Momotov representatives can be found in the mountains, at an altitude of up to 3100 m. Most species lead a sedentary lifestyle, some make short seasonal migrations [2] .

The national bird of Nicaragua is the Brown Momot ( Eumomota superciliosa ). The same species is the national bird of El Salvador , where it is known as Torogos : as a symbol of the country, it was approved by the Legislative Assembly on October 21, 1999 .
