The Painted Desert Inn is a small traditional style hotel of pueblo buildings in the Petrified Forest National Park in the Arizona state of Painted Desert . It was built in 1937-1940 on the site of an earlier hotel, “ Stone Tree Houses”, Stone Tree House [1] . The hotel was designed in 1937 by the architect of the US National Park Service Lyle E. Bennett, and it was built by employees of the Civil Environmental Protection Corps [2] .
After reconstruction, led by Mary Colter , an architect known for her Wild West buildings, the hotel was managed by the Fred Harvey Company in 1947–1963, after which it was closed. [3] In the mid-1970s it was proposed to demolish the building, but after public protests the building was opened for limited use in 1976. The building is listed in the US National Historic Monuments in 1987. After major repairs in 2006, a museum and a library were opened in the building.
A Hopi artist, Fred Cabotie , who had already collaborated with Mary Colter in the construction of the Hopi House in the Grand Canyon , painted the walls of the hotel in 1947-48. Caboti's paintings depict the daily life of the Hopi Indians, including their journey through the Colorful Desert to collect salt [4] .
