History
An Early Period Called Brawl (1994-1996)
When David Draiman joined Disturbed , the band was known as Brawl [3] , which consisted of vocalist Erich Avalt, guitarist Dan Donigan , drummer Mike Wengren , and bassist Steve Cmack . Before giving a name to the band (“Brawl”), as Dan said in a DVD released for the decade of Disturbed, the very first name of the group should be “Crawl”. The name was replaced so that there were no quarrels with another group. Erich Avalt left the band shortly after recording a demo tape, while the other three members posted announcements that they were looking for a new vocalist. They sent an ad to a local music newspaper in Chicago , Illinois , called the Illinois Entertainer. [4] David Draiman responded to the group’s announcement that same month [4] . Guitarist Dan Donigan commented on David Dreiman’s vocals: “After a minute or two he started scribbling these melodies ... I play the guitar and smile from ear to ear, trying to hide what I like about the guy. You know, I didn’t want to say yes, we will call you back. But I liked it so much. You know, of all the vocalists with whom we talked or listened, he ( David Dreiman ) was the only singer who was ready to sing in any style, as we wanted. And it made a huge impression on me ” [4] . The official date for the formation of the Disturbed group is considered to be 1996 , when David Draiman joined the already formed team of Dan Donigan, Steve Cmack and Mike Wengren [5] . After listening and joining the group, David Dreyman gave the name to the band “Disturbed” , which became the official name of the group. When asked why the group was named Disturbed , David Draiman said: “I have been considering this name for the group for many years. It just symbolizes everything that we felt at that time. The level to which we had to correspond worried us, and we tried to go beyond the limits of the possible ” [6] .
The Sickness (1998-2000)
After renaming, the group recorded two demo tapes of three tracks each. The first recorded The Game , Down with the Sickness and Meaning of Life ; on the second - Want , Stupify and Droppin 'Plates , they also created the mascot of their group - The Guy and signed a contract with Giant Records . In 2000, the band released their debut album, entitled " The Sickness ". The album reached number 29 on the Billboard 200, with more than four million copies sold in the United States since its release.
Believe (2001-2003)
In February 2001, it was announced that the band had a cover of the song “Midlife Crisis” by Faith No More [7] , but the song had not been performed by the group for a long time [8] . On June 4, 2002, Disturbed released a documentary DVD about the group, which was called MOL , this disc contains video materials telling about the group during their work in the studio, and there are also several clips made from the band's concert performances [9] . On September 17, 2002, Disturbed released their second studio album, titled " Believe " , which debuted in first place on the Billboard 200 [10] . The clip for the first single from the album “Believe” , which was called “Prayer”, was refused to be shown by most television stations, explaining that the clip has many features in common with the September 11, 2001 terror act [11] . Also at this time, David Draiman recorded a song called “Forsaken,” which was released as the soundtrack to the movie Queen of the Damned [12] .
In the summer of 2001, Disturbed took part in a traditional Ozzfest tour. By that time, the group's popularity had grown so much that the festival organizers moved it from the opening groups closer to the Black Sabbath headliners, and the song “Fear” was included in the Ozzfest 2001 collection.
After the release of their second studio album “ Believe ” on September 17, 2002, Disturbed again took part in the Ozzfest tour in 2003 and then began their own tour, which was called Music as a Weapon II. The bands Chevelle , Taproot , and Unloco participated with them on this tour [13] . An unreleased song called “Dehumanized” debuted during the Disturbed tour. [14] After Disturbed finished the Music as a Weapon II tour, Steve Kmak was fired by the band due to "personal disagreements." Steve Cmack was replaced by John Moyer [15] [16] , who became the band's new bass player . After that, Disturbed with John Moyer as a new bass player played a live concert at House of Blues and performed two new songs called Hell and Monster, both of which are bonus tracks on Ten Thousand Fists' third studio album [16 ] .
Ten Thousand Fists (2004-2006)
Ten Thousand Fists was released on September 20, 2005 and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 , selling approximately 238,000 copies in the first week of release. [17] The album received platinum status on January 5, 2006 , selling 1,000,000 copies in the United States [18] . The group led Ozzfest in 2006 along with Ozzy Osbourne , System of a Down , Lacuna Coil , DragonForce , Avenged Sevenfold , and Hatebreed [19] .
In an interview with Launch Radio Networks, vocalist David Draiman stated that twenty songs were recorded for the album, but only fourteen songs were officially included in the album [20] . The rest of the songs were included in the singles or distributed via the Internet: “Hell”, which was included in the single “Stricken” [21] ; “Monster,” which was available on iTunes [22] , which was later included in the Ten Thousand Fists Tour Edition ; "Two Worlds", which was also available on the Ten Thousand Fists Tour Edition and "Sickened", which was included in the single "Land of Confusion" [23] . Ten Thousand Fists debuted in first place in the US and went double platinum.
In 2006, the European tour was twice delayed due to David Dreiman’s voice problems. [24] Due to voice problems, David Dreiman performed a surgical operation that was successful [25] . Also, vocalist David Dreiman was involved in a scandal because he criticized RIAA lawsuits against individual users of file-sharing networks , despite the fact that the publisher Disturbed is under the protection of the RIAA: “Instead of spending money on lawsuits against children, they could learn how to use the Internet effectively. I did not ask them to protect me, and I do not need their protection ” [26] .
At the end of 2006, Disturbed went on a tour called Music as a Weapon III. The groups Flyleaf , Stone Sour and Nonpoint participated with them on this tour. [27] Disturbed finished the tour Music as a Weapon III at the end of the same 2006 [28] . Shortly thereafter, David Draiman announced that the group began work on their fourth studio album [29] .
Indestructible (2007-2009)
On June 3, 2008, the group released their fourth album, entitled " Indestructible " ( Rus. "Indestructible" ). And later on the song of the same name she shot a clip. The album contains darker songs than those recorded before it. Some songs relate to the real events that David Dreiman experienced before recording the album. The album includes 2 songs: "Perfect Insanity" and "Divide", which were recorded before their first album, but were not included in any album. To match the nature of the songs, David told the band to play the darkest music possible. Despite the gloomy themes of the songs, the song "Indestructible" was recorded to support soldiers participating in the war. The album was met by mixed opinions of critics. The album received platinum status from the RIAA after selling one million copies in the United States. The song “Inside the Fire” in 2009 [30] was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category “Best Hard Rock Song”.
The band began their Music as a Weapon IV tour in March 2009, and ended in late May. The tour also dubbed the “festival”, which featured bands such as Killswitch Engage , Lacuna Coil , and Chimaira on the same site [31] .
In an interview, David Dreiman briefly mentioned the band’s fifth album, stating that his lyrical themes would be as bleak as Indestructible's [32] . The group stated that they would rest for a few months and then begin to write songs for the next album, most likely the recording of the album would begin in late 2009 [33] . In another interview with Mike Wengren and John Moyer, it was stated that judging by the feelings experienced by Dreiman in the last few years of his life, the new Disturbed album will be aggressive, angry and “hit hard”. Hungren also said that a new album could be released in spring or summer of 2010 [34] .
Asylum and the Break (2010-2011)
On April 21, 2010, Disturbed announced the name of its new album, Asylum . This album was released by the Reprise label in late summer. As with Indestructible, Disturbed produce Asylum on their own. Composition began in September 2008, and recording began in February 2009. Asylum was released on August 31, 2010. On the official website of Disturbed, you can already listen to the preview of the new single “ Another Way to Die ”. The single was released on June 15 (June 16 on iTunes ). A video for the song also appeared on Youtube. The album will include 12 tracks. On July 15, a new song, Asylum, was uploaded on the official website. The song is available for download from July 20 in the iTunes Music Store, as well as on other sites. Also on the band’s official website you can watch the official video for the single “Another Way to Die” in HD. On August 24, another single became available - " The Animal ", which includes two songs - "Never Again" and "The Animal", respectively. In addition, several songs of the group are included in the DLC for the Rock Band series of games. The album was released on August 31, 2010.
Asylum debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with sales of over 179,000. This is the band’s fourth album to reach the top of this US music chart. Prior to this, only Metallica and Dave Matthews Band [35] [36] had the same series of successful albums.
Despite the success and sold-out concerts, in the summer of 2011, the musicians announced that the group was going on indefinite leave - but perhaps someday in the future it would return to the stage. They explained their decision by a systemic crisis in the rock industry, as well as a desire to engage in personal projects, while assuring fans that the sudden decision was not the result of an internal split in the group [37] . However, in November of the same year, the group released a collection of b-side songs called “ The Lost Children ” , and the single “ Hell ” was released for a separate download.
Other projects (2012—2014)
On February 8, 2012, it was announced that John Moyer would become Adrenaline Mob 's new bassist, debuting with them on March 12th. In May 2012, Draiman announces his new project called Device . Their debut album was released on July 23 of that year. In January 2015, it was announced that Moyer was creating a new band, Art of Anarchy, along with Scott Weiland , Ron Tal and the twins John and Vince Wott, their debut album should be released in the spring of that year.

In the video, the band’s mascot, The Guy, lies on life support and breathes. The new Disturbed logo was also shown. On June 22, another video was published showing the awakening of The Guy and the start of the 18-hour countdown at the office. site. Finally, a reunion was officially announced on June 23, the new album “ Immortalized ” was announced , which has been secretly recorded since 2014, and the single “ The Vengeful One ” was released, the album was released on August 21. On July 23, iTunes became available for ordering the second single “ Immortalized ” from the new album of the same name, and also announced other upcoming releases of singles until the album itself: July 31 - “ Fire It Up ”, August 7 - “ What Are You Waiting For ”. The band’s first concert after the break was also announced - on the day of the release of the new album, the group will sing it in their hometown of Chicago. 16 songs are currently available.
Disturbed released a live album called Live at Red Rocks on November 18, 2016. The band presented a performance with the track "The Sound of Silence" on The X Factor Australia.
The 59th Grammy Award Ceremony was held on February 12, 2017 at the Staples Center, Los Angeles. Rock is represented [38] in 4 categories: Best Rock Performance, Best Metal Performance, Best Rock Song and Best Rock Album. Disturbed is presented in the best rock performance along with Beyonce, David Bowie, Twenty One Pilots and Alabama Shakes. According to an interview with Metal Hammer magazine [39] : David questioned why his band and pop star were nominated in the same category. Earlier this week, it was announced that a cover of The Sound Of Silence at the Conan show would be against Don't Hurt Yourself from Beyoncé and Jack White as the best rock performance of the year. Dreiman also questioned the definition of a rock music ceremony, and says that both participating on the same list means "something went wrong."
Evolution (2018 - Present)
On August 16, 2018, the first single “ Are You Ready ” was released from the new Evolution album, which was released on October 19 of that year and consists of 14 tracks. The second single “A Reason to Fight” was released on September 21 of the same year [40] . In support of the album, the group announced the Evolution World Tour, which took place in early 2019. The announced dates included shows throughout North America and Canada, as well as the European stage of the tour [41] . The group also announced that although there will be more concerts, there will still be fewer concerts than in the earlier days of the group [42] . On March 25, 2019, Disturbed announced a large-scale summer tour with Pop Evil and In This Moment , where Pop Evil will open the first half of concerts, and In This Moment - the second [43] .
Talisman
The mascot Disturbed received the name “The Guy” ( Russian “Guy” ), was first fully shown in the video for the song “Land of Confusion” and appeared on the covers of four albums and one collection of Disturbed : Ten Thousand Fists , Indestructible , Asylum , The Lost Children and Immortalized (on the cover of this album, rocks form his face). “The Guy” became the band’s official mascot and was completely drawn by Spawn [44] comic book creator Todd MacFarlane .
Style and lyrical themes
The group was classified as heavy metal [5] [45] [46] or hard rock , and at the beginning of the career most of them were nu metal [47] [48] [49] [50] . Disturbed is also regarded by some critics as alternative rock [51] [49] and alternative metal [5] . However, when heavy metal fans didn't find Disturbed heavy enough, David Draiman said:
“We probably have too much melody, or our music is not quite stormy and caustic. Despite the fact that I love this style of music, this is not what we are trying to do. If we put creativity in this framework, then in our music there will be more hard rock than heavy metal ” [52] .
“The secret is that our music was never part of any genre, although we definitely benefited from the popularity of what was called nu metal at the time,” says Dreiman. “We never had the stereotypical traits that other groups had. We do not read text, we do not use phonograms. We play, in my opinion, classic metal. Black Sabbath , Iron Maiden , Judas Priest , Metallica , Pantera - groups that made us want to play ” [53] .
According to David Draiman in the MOL home documentary video, the lyrics he writes are based on his life experiences and perceptions. He stated that he likes to give mysterious lyrics to his ideas [4] . Topics range from the Judeo-Christian concept of Heaven and Hell, domestic violence, suicide, insanity, relationships, war, to fantasy - like bloodthirstiness, werewolves, and demons.
Guitarist Dan Donigan uses the Drop C, Drop C #, and Drop B (sometimes Eb) settings. These settings are lower than regular E. These settings allow a heavier sound and riff chord. Dan also uses subtle electronic effects, which the rest of the band calls The Danny Donegan Orchestra.
