Biography

Born in the family of the famous cantor Boruch Leib Shulman (1870-1963), great-grandson of the Jewish writer Kalman Shulman (1819-1899). After graduating from high school, he studied singing with V. Selyavin (artist of the Odessa Opera House ), then with D. Gorin (in Moscow).

He has performed since 1922 . In 1924 - the first tour of Ukraine as part of the brigade of the All-Union Professional Union of Art Workers (RABIS). In March 1925 he gave his first recital in Odessa, including Jewish songs and romances in the program.

In 1934 he graduated from the music and drama department of the State Institute of Theater Arts . In 1934-1935 he was a soloist at the Stanislavsky Moscow Opera Studio .

Since 1935, he devoted his life to collecting and performing Jewish songs, including in the programs also opera arias, which he performed in Yiddish . During the Great Patriotic War, he spoke at the front, in hospitals. In 1948 , Golda Meir , the Israeli ambassador to the USSR, attended his concert in Moscow.

In 1949 , after a concert in Kislovodsk, he was arrested. At a private court in Kiev on charges of Jewish nationalism, he was sentenced to ten years in prison. He was rehabilitated in 1956, returned to Moscow and resumed concert activity: participated in productions of the Moscow Jewish Drama Ensemble, performed Jewish folk songs.

In recent years, he was engaged in teaching, published the “Collection of Jewish songs from the repertoire of Zinovy ​​Shulman” (M., 1973), the memoirs “Live, my song. Notes of the singer ”(Sovetish Geimland. - 1969; Friendship of Peoples. - 1969).
