The scene of the battle on June 9, 1800, between the vanguard of the French army of the First Consul of Napoleon Bonaparte , led by divisional general Jean Lann and the Austrians under the command of Major General Peter Ott. Napoleon , unaware of the fall of Genoa , was on his way to help the city when his vanguard under the command of Lannes was attacked by Ott, who had 18,000 soldiers who sought to unite with Melas . Lannes managed to hold out until the reinforcements approached, after which he attacked the Austrians and threw them back to Torton , capturing 5,000 prisoners. Subsequently, Napoleon , already becoming emperor, in recognition of the importance of this battle for his campaign, gave Lannes the title of Duke of Montebello, which his descendants still wear.
