In ancient Rome, the city was known as the “Temple of Fortune” ( Fanum Fortunae ). Octavian Augustus settled here his veteran soldiers, surrounded the city with walls (partly preserved), and built a triple arch (which also survived) at the entrance to the colony. At the Battle of Fano (271), the Romans converged with the Alemans .

After the Ostrogoth ruin in 538, Fano was rebuilt by the Byzantines as the center of the Sea Pyatigrad as part of the Ravenna Exarchate . In the XIV century, the city came under the rule of the Malatesta house, one of whose representatives, Sigismondo Pandolfo , erected a powerful fortress in Fano. In 1464, after a siege, Federigo da Montefeltro took control of it, acting on behalf of the pope.

From then until the completion of Risorgimento (1860), Fano was part of the Papal States . In the XVII century, Pius V ordered to clean his harbor. During the First World War, the city was subjected to massive bombing of the Austrian Air Force. The Second World War brought even greater destruction (all ancient towers, including bell towers) were killed.

The patron saint of the city is venerated St. Paternian , celebration of July 10 .
