Sherman, Carlos

Sherman was born in Montevideo , the capital of Uruguay. His father was a Jewish immigrant from Western Belarus , and his mother was an Indian . He grew up in Argentina , studied philology at the M. Moren National Institute in Buenos Aires from 1951 to 1956, and began his career as a writer there. He was friends with the poet Pablo Neruda . He worked at the Losada Publishing House (1954-1956), in 1955 he became editor-in-chief of the Mi Pueblo newspaper.

In 1956, under the influence of Soviet propaganda, his father decided to return to Belarus (then the Byelorussian SSR ) with his whole family. There, Sherman first worked as a turner in a match factory, a senior seller of a bookstore in Pinsk in the Brest region (1956-1962), a freelance translator, and then as a translator and librarian (since 1964 a bibliographer , since 1977 head of the publishing department of the Yakub Fundamental Library Kolas National Academy of Sciences of the BSSR ). Since 1980 he devoted himself to literary activity.

In the late 1980s, Sherman launched a campaign to establish the Belarusian Center for the International Writing and Human Rights Organization PEN , and after the center was created, he was its vice president until 2001, when he was forced to resign due to health problems.

Sherman died in a Norwegian hospital at 71 years old. The funeral service and farewell took place on March 10, 2005 in the Catholic Cathedral of the Norwegian town of Kristiansand , where the family lived in recent years. After that, the body was cremated, and the ashes of Carlos Sherman were transported to Belarus.

In Argentina, Sherman was published since 1952, in the Russian periodicals of Belarus - since 1964, in the Belarusian language - since 1975. From Spanish to Russian, he translated M. Sapat Oliveli ’s novel “The Black Corral ” (Neman magazine, 1967), the novel by G. Garcia Marquez “Autumn of the Patriarch” (together with V. Taras , the magazine “Neman”, 1977 ^[1] ), in Belarusian - works by various authors, including Nicholas Guillen , Gabriel Garcia Marquez , Felix Pete Rodriguez , Armando Tejado Gomez , Gabriela Mistral , an anthology of modern Cuban poetry.

In his translation from Belarusian into Spanish, books of poetry and prose were published by more than 10 authors, including:

• selected works of Yanka Kupala and Yakub Kolas “Paparazzi Kvetka” (1982)
• works of A. Kuleshov “May Besyadz” (1976)
• R. Borodulina “Chorny vol moy me trivogі” (1985)
• novel by I. Chigrinov “Crying of Quail” (1988)
• the story of Vasil Bykov “ Survive until dawn ” (1980), “ Obelisk ” (1984), “ In the Fog ” (1989) and others.

He was a member of the Union of Belarusian Writers (since 1979) and a member of the International Association of Literary Critics.
