Career

Moto Hagio made her debut as a professional author in 1969 with the small manga Lulu to Mimi , published in the Nakayoshi magazine of Kodansya Publishing House. According to the mangaka, in high school, she found out that a professional animator lives in her hometown of Omut , and wanted to meet her. The girl, whose name was Makiko Hirata, was the same age as Hagio. She was published by Kodansya Publishing House and offered to introduce Hagio to the editor. After graduating from high school, Hagio entered a design school and drew some small stories, and then accepted the offer of Makiko Hirata, contacting the editor of Kodansya. The editor suggested that Hagio send him some manga, and so Lulu to Mimi was born. [5]

Later, many short stories of Hagio were published in various editions of Shogakukan . Work on the shojo manga was complicated by the fact that, according to Japanese traditions, it was considered unacceptable for a girl to initiate romantic relationships. Therefore, in the early 1970s, Hagio came up with the idea of portraying as such an initiator a gay man with a feminine appearance [6] . Two years after her debut, she drew the manga Juichigatsu no Gimunajiumu ( Japanese 11 月 の ギ ム ナ ジ ウ з jujigigatsu no gimunadzium , "November Gymnasium") , where she openly talked about the homosexual relationship of boys in school. In 1974, based on this short story, a longer Thomas no Shinzou ("Heart of Thomas") was published, which sometimes begins the story of the appearance of the shonen-ai genre. [7] In 1976, Hagio received the Shogakukan Publishing House Award for the sci-fi They Were Eleven and historical Poe no Ichizoku . [8] In the 1980s, the publication of the first continuous manga, Marginal, began . [9] In July 2009, the mangaka celebrated its fortieth anniversary as a mangaka. [10]
