Club career
He became a player of Borussia at the age of 17. After three years in the youth team, he ended up in the main team, where he played the full season. But after the season, Hötgges moved to Bremen “Werder Bremen”, as the coach of the “stallions” Hannes Weisweiler believed that the defender needed to move on, but in Monchengladbach he could not do this.
At Werder Bremen, Horst was a huge success with head coach Willy Multaup . In his first season he became the champion of Germany. After this season, he was noticed by the head coach of the Bundestim Helmut Schön , who really liked the intransigence and fear of going to the end of the defender.
Horst-Dieter Höttges remained faithful to Werder until the end of his career. In total for the club, he played 420 matches, scoring 55 goals in them.
After completing a career, Horst played in amateur village clubs SC Oberbecksen and TSV Achim.

Horst made his debut in the national team on March 13, 1965 in a friendly match against the Italian national team , which took place in Hamburg at the Volksparkstadion stadium and ended with the score 1-1.
