The browser is based on Mozilla , however, the usual XUL interface for Mozilla has been replaced by the Cocoa interface, standard for Mac OS X. The browser exists only in the Mac OS X version and uses the features of this operating system ( Spotlight , Address Book , Keychain , Finder , Dock , Bonjour , Services, and System Preferences technologies).
Camino does not contain any means for working with e-mail or creating web pages. Like other projects of the Mozilla Foundation , Camino uses the Gecko core, it was planned to switch to WebKit [3] , but due to lack of resources in May 2013, it was decided to curtail the development of the project [1] .

Creation History
At the end of 2001, and as part of Netscape Communications launched a project whose goal was to develop a browser based on the Gecko kernel as a Mac OS X Cocoa application. In early 2002, they were joined by one of the creators of Firefox (then called Phoenix) . As a result, they created the Chimera application - a small and lightweight browser.
The first user-accessible version of Chimera 0.1 was released on February 13, 2002. Early versions became very popular due to their high speed compared to Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.2, which then dominated Mac OS X. Many considered it the fastest browser, but it was less functional than others.
Dave Hyatt was hired by Apple Computer to work on a future Safari browser. The remaining small team of developers and employees of the quality control department were able to release the next version of the program for the MacWorld Expo in January 2003 . However, two days before it, the owner of Netscape, AOL decided to completely close the project. Despite this, on March 3, 2003, the remaining backbone of the Chimera team released Camino 0.7.
The name Chimera had to be changed to Camino for legal reasons. The fact is that the word Chimera (" Chimera " from ancient Greek mythology ) was very popular among programs for working with hypertext . One of the first graphical browsers was named Chimera, scientists from the University of California at Irvine called their system for working with hypertext the same way.
Unlike version 0.7, which was created mainly by the Netscape team, version 0.8 was, according to lead developer , an open source triumph and open development process: “People from all over the world helped us with patches, quality control, search for errors, localization, graphics. "
In February 2005, one of the leading Camino developers, was hired by the Mozilla Foundation to improve support for Mac OS X in projects such as Firefox , Thunderbird, and the Mozilla toolkit . He completely joined the Mozilla Foundation in May 2005 .
In September 2005, Pinkerton accepted Google’s offer, where he now works on the Google Firefox team. He is currently working on the Camino project as part of Google Program.
Camino 1.0, released on February 14, 2006 , thanks to the efforts of another developer , became the first Mozilla browser to support , that is, it worked on Apple Macintosh computers based on both IBM PowerPC and Intel base.
