
The Red Book of the Republic of Belarus ( Belorussian. Chyrvonaya kniga Respublikі Belarus ) is an annotated list of rare species of flora and fauna in Belarus that face the threat of extinction in the country.
The first edition of the book was published in 1981 in Belarusian according to the resolution of the 1979 Council of Ministers of the BSSR ( TSB publishing house). The book consisted of one volume and included 80 species of animals and 85 species of plants . The second, two-volume, publication was already published in independent Belarus in 1993 , which included 14 species of mammals , 75 species of birds , 2 species of reptiles , 1 species of amphibians , 5 species of fish , 69 species of insects , 10 species of crustaceans , 1 species of mollusks in the section of animals. . The plant section included 156 species of vascular , 15 species of moss , 9 species of algae , 17 species of lichens , 17 species of mushrooms . The third edition of the Book was published in 2006 in Russian , which included 189 species of animals (63 species added, 57 excluded) and 274 plant species (91 added, 31 excluded), lichens up to 24 species (4 excluded, 11 added), mushrooms - up to 29 species (3 excluded, 15 added). Note: in the international red book, red indicates the extinct species, white - the endangered species, green - the restored species.
Since 2007 there is an electronic version of the book.
The collection of plants, fishing and hunting for animals included in the Red Book are prohibited.
The Red Book also contains a “ black list ” - a list of species that have disappeared or were not found in recent years on the territory of Belarus. [1] [2]

Environmental relevance categories
The Red Book of the Republic of Belarus corresponds to the generally accepted categories of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
- Category I - the highest national environmental significance. Includes taxa having a very low or rapidly declining population, the conservation of the population of which is impossible without special measures. Also includes taxa, the national population of which is of high international importance.
- Category II Includes taxa that are currently not directly threatened with extinction on the territory of the republic, but which tend to decrease in numbers and / or habitats and projected deterioration in the near future, as well as having an unfavorable international or European conservation status.
- Category III Includes taxa that are not directly endangered, but are at risk of extinction in the near future.
- Category IV Combines taxa that do not belong to the three previous categories, but are close to them, have an unfavorable tendency in the surrounding territories, or are dependent on the implemented protection measures.
