History
In order to transfer the Soviet railways to diesel traction, according to the results of the operation of the first diesel locomotives, it was decided to base the series of locomotives built at the end of 1924 by order of the Russian Railway Mission in Germany, the model of EL 2, (initially, before the emigration of Y. Lomonosov, had a series Yuel1) equal in power to the steam locomotive E and having an electric direct current transmission.
After the manufacture and testing of two prototypes ( EL 5 in Germany and EL 9 in the USSR), the first advanced diesel locomotive was assembled in 1932 , the mass production of which began in 1934 at the Kolomensky Zavod (leading engineers N. N. Dobrovolsky, B S. Pozdnyakov).
Prior to decommissioning, 46 diesel locomotives of the E-series were built, including prototypes, which, after preliminary tests and pilot trips along the Moscow-Kazan railway, were sent to Ashgabat . The decision to use diesel locomotives in Central Asia was caused by the lack of water suitable for refueling steam locomotives there and the availability of liquid diesel fuel. During operation, a number of technical shortcomings were identified, in connection with which the design of the elements of the diesel locomotive was constantly refined.
Since the NKPS, by personal order of L. M. Kaganovich, refused to accept diesel locomotives for operation in 1937, 18 vehicles manufactured in 1937-1941 were equipped for use as mobile diesel power plants.
In 1948, the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Railway Transport developed a project for the modernization of individual E-nodes, which allowed to extend their service life.
Locomotives, with the proper organization of maintenance, have shown reliability and compliance with the technical requirements of their time.
The last diesel locomotives of the E-series used for train work were removed from the park of the Ashgabat railway in the mid -1960s due to obsolescence.
