Chrome OS

Chrome OS - Google's OS , designed for devices on ARM or x86 processors [2] . Google Chrome OS is built on a hybrid kernel (the base is the Linux kernel and services from Google) using the Google Chrome browser running on a new, specially designed window system [1] . A part of the system source code was opened on November 19, 2009 as a project of Chromium OS [3] . The first netbooks bundled with Google Chrome OS were expected in the second half of 2010 [2] , but their release was delayed and was postponed to the second half of 2011 [4] .

Chrome OS market positioning

The main feature will be the dominance of web applications over the usual functions of the OS. The key role is given to the browser. The strategy of creating a new product implies an architecture that is undemanding on the hardware resources of the personal computer used to log onto the Internet. The tendency to shift the center of gravity from the user's PC to Internet resources can be traced on many other Google products and corresponds to the ideology of " cloud computing ."

Google reports that the main features of the new OS from the point of view of end users will be:

  • speed: downloads, access the Internet , receive and send e-mail, etc.
  • tight integration with Internet services;
  • reliability of work;
  • security in automatic mode;
  • automatic update;
  • simplicity;
  • Google Play and Android Nougat support (in all chrome books of 2017);
  • “Material design” in the style of Android.

Chrome OS is designed as a practical implementation of the concepts of a typical virtual desktop ( DaaS ) and remote access to a web application ( SaaS ). This removes the need for users to perform the functions of a system administrator, such as receiving (downloading) distributions, installing and updating applications. Loss or breakdown of the device (netbook or laptop) becomes less critical, since you can access the data from any other computer with Chrome OS [5] through the login and password of your Google account. However, if a password is stolen, attackers will be able to get access to its data unnoticed by the user. Chrome OS is not suitable for users of resource-intensive applications (graphics programs, large amounts of editing). Also not planned to support today's common devices on conventional hard drives (not SSD ). Many user features of the operating system are clearly demonstrated by its prototype - OS Chromium. [6]

The visual design of the OS will be sustained in a minimalist style, in the spirit of the Google Chrome browser.

Hardware and Development

Google Chrome OS is positioned as an operating system for various devices - from small netbooks to full-sized desktop systems and supports x86 - and ARM-based architecture of processors. [2]

The Google Chrome OS team works with many technology companies to design and develop new devices that provide high-quality user experience. Among them are companies such as Acer , Adobe , Asus , Freescale Semiconductor , Lenovo , Qualcomm , Texas Instruments , Toshiba [7] , NVIDIA . Intel also takes part in the development, cooperation with which began “some time” before the official announcement. [8] Dell is also considering testing Chrome OS. [9] The result of this collaboration was Chromebooks .

Application software

The official blog of Google Russia reports the following [10] :

For application developers, the platform will be the web . All existing web applications will run on Google Chrome OS automatically, and new ones can be written using any web technology. And, of course, these applications will work not only on Google Chrome OS, but also on any standard OS browsers: Windows, Mac and Linux, providing developers with the largest user base of all platforms.

Criticism

  • The system has been criticized by experts for the unfulfilled promises in the field of information security , although for the Linux kernel on which the system is based, for the entire period of its existence and active use malicious programs (in the form of exploits ) appeared quite rarely and did not exist for long. [eleven]

History

  • On July 7, 2009, Google officially announced its intention to create a new operating system. [2]
  • On the Internet, regularly published images issued for " screenshots of Google Chrome OS." [12] [13] [14] In particular, the first batch of screenshots appeared the next day after the announcement of Google’s work on the operating system [15] , but a day later the author reported that this was a joke [16] .
  • There were reports that Chrome OS will appear on netbooks in November 2009. [17] Chrome OS will be pre-installed on Chinese netbooks with an original Loongson processor with an ARM-like architecture. [18] .
  • In November 2009, the first official beta version of Chrome OS from Google appeared under the Chromium brand. A few weeks later, Dell announced the creation of its version of Chrome OS. [nineteen]
  • In December 2009, Google management made a statement about the fundamental possibility of combining Chrome OS and Android in the future into a single operating system [20]
  • In May 2011, at the Google I / O conference, Google introduced the first production laptops (the so-called Chromebooks ) running the Chrome OS operating system [21] .
  • At the Google I / O 2016 conference, it was indirectly mentioned that changes in the Chrome operating system will allow launching applications from Google Play designed for smartphones and tablets [22] .
  • A month after the presentation of support for Android applications on Chrome OS, the work of the new function was demonstrated and support was introduced on three laptops: Chromebook Pixel (2015), Acer Chromebook R11 and Asus Chromebook Flip. [23]
