Biography
Oksen Mirzoyan was born on June 11, 1961 in the village of Angehakot, Sisian district of the Armenian SSR. In 1965, his family moved to the village of Bagramyan, Echmiadzin district . In 1977, he began weightlifting under the leadership of Ashot Vilasyan and the next year he was able to fulfill the norm of the USSR master of sports . In 1981, he won the World Youth Championship, after which he joined the national team of the USSR. In 1983 he became the winner of the World and European Championships in Moscow . During these competitions, he set new world records in the clean and jerk by the amount of exercises [2] . He was a favorite of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles , but could not take part in them because of the decision of the political leadership of the USSR to boycott the Games by Soviet athletes. At the tournament a month after the end of the Olympics, Friendship-84 twice improved world records in a jerk . But in the end, he lost to Naim Suleymanov from Bulgaria. At the Olympic Games in Seoul, he took second place, but after the Bulgarian athlete Mitko Grablev , who won first place, was convicted of doping and disqualified, the title of Olympic champion passed to Oksen Mirzoyan [3] .
In 1993, Oksen Mirzoyan completed his sports career and switched to social and coaching work. In 1998 - 2004 he was the president of the weightlifting federation of Armenia and the head coach of the national team in this sport. Since 2004, he has been Vice President of the National Olympic Committee of Armenia and Director of the Yerevan Weightlifting Sports School. He trained his son, European Champion (2009) Arakel Mirzoyan and his nephew, silver medalist of the European Championship (2011) Araik Mirzoyan [4] .
