Cedega

Cedega (formerly WineX) is a commercial product based on the source code of the Wine project, which allows you to run Windows applications on Unix systems . Created by TransGaming Technologies. Cedega differs from Wine in its focus on running games written for Microsoft Windows on Linux . In particular, improved DirectX API support has been added for this. There is also support for some copy protection applied in games. In the latest versions, Cedega has a simple graphical interface that allows you to install and run Windows games, configure the program.

Typically, developers follow the latest innovations among Windows games, test and improve support for the most popular of them. Many games run as fast as in their native OS.

Prior to version 4.0, released June 22, 2004 , the project was called WineX. The new name represents the pun: Wine - English. wine , Cedega - a grape variety.

Distribution

Cedega - proprietary software , distributed by subscription, which, in addition to the possibility of obtaining new versions of the program, allows you to vote on which games to support developers next. TransGaming opens part of Cedega's source codes for free access through CVS , in order to attract third-party programmers to write patches. Often this opportunity is used to get the free version of Cedega, which, however, is devoid of a number of TransGaming's own developments.

GameTree Linux

TransGaming recently announced the transformation of Cedega into a new project - GameTree Linux.

GameTree Linux will become a "gaming platform" for Linux, similar to the popular Steam service, which provides distribution of games for Windows, Mac OS X, and GNU / Linux. It will be based on the achievements of Cedega, i.e. special edition of Wine to run Windows-games in other operating systems.

Cedega Gaming Service, available on a paid subscription, will go into oblivion. The new TransGaming business model implies that GameTree will be distributed free of charge, and users will pay directly for the games themselves purchased through the new service.

At the same time, TransGaming plans go further: as part of the GameTree TV initiative, a similar distribution of games is expected for various household devices (for example, for set-top boxes).

The GameTree Linux project has a website launched - www.gametreelinux.com . Developers can already register on it - for this you need to get the GameTree Dev ID in the GameTree Developer Program.
