Makar Mazay Memorial ( International Boxing Tournament in memory of Makar Mazay ) - an annual international class A boxing tournament, held in Mariupol in memory of the famous steelmaker Makar Mazay , the oldest of all boxing tournaments held in the countries of the former Soviet Union. Venue - sports complex "Illichivets" .
History
The tournament was first held in 1967 at the initiative of Mikhail Zavyalov. Competitions were very popular among the strongest boxers of the USSR. For the victory in the tournament, the title of master of sports of the USSR was awarded.
In the early years of Ukraine’s independence, interest in it gradually faded, but in 2006 , thanks to organizational and sponsorship support from OJSC Ilyich Iron and Steel Works , the memorial became international and received category “A”.
Interesting Facts
In 1993, Vitali Klitschko was awarded the title of master of sports of international importance for his victory in the Memorial, and his brother Vladimir Klitschko held his first fight in the adult age group at the same tournament.
