Biography
Katherine Grayson, nee Zelma Katherine Elisabeth Hedrick ( born Zelma Kathryn Elisabeth Hedrick ), was born February 9, 1922 in the city of Winston-Salem in North Carolina . Later, her family moved to St. Louis , where during a short performance at the Municipal Opera House, she discovered the talent of the singer. After that, she received singing lessons at the State Opera House in Chicago .
At the very beginning of the 1940s, she signed a contract with MGM and in 1941 she made her film debut in the film Private Secretary Andy Hardy. MGM Studios decided to make Catherine a second Dina Durbin , who shone at Universal Studios in those years, and over the next decade Grayson appeared in such famous films as Thousands of Greetings (1943), Raise Anchors (1945 ), Siegfeld's Frenzy (1946), While Clouds Float (1946), Kissing Bandit (1948), The Floating Theater (1951) and Kiss Me, Kat (1953). She also starred twice with Mario Lanza in the musical films Midnight Kiss (1949) and Favorite of New Orleans (1950).
With the end of the musical era at MGM, Katherine’s film career ended. After that, Grayson moved to the theater stage. She has appeared in many comedy plays, including The Floating Theater, Rosalind, Kiss Me, Kat and The Merry Widow , for whose role she was nominated for a Sarah Siddons Theater Award. In 1962, Catherine replaced Julie Andrews in the Broadway production of Camelot. This production was very successful in her theatrical career and over the next 16 months, Grayson toured with her to many cities in the United States.
Katherine Grayson also did not leave her career as an opera singer. In the 1960s, she performed in operas such as La Boheme , Madame Butterfly , Orpheus in Hell, and La Traviata .
The actress had several roles on television. In 1956, she was nominated for an Emmy for her role in the TV series General Electric Theater. In the late 1980s, she appeared in several episodes of the series " She wrote the Murder, " starring Angela Lansbury .
Katherine Grayson was married twice and both marriages ended in divorce. From her second husband in 1948 she gave birth to a daughter.
In the last years of her life, the actress was an observer of the vocal and choral studio program at Idaho State University. [1] [2] Katherine Grayson died in a dream at her home in Los Angeles on February 17, 2010 at the age of 88. [3]
