Football career

Alf Steward played football, serving in the army from 1915 to 1918, after which he transferred to the Steylibridge Celtic club. In 1919, as an amateur, he moved to Manchester United , where he was counted on as a replacement for the club’s main goalkeeper, Jack Mu . As an amateur, he also played for Heaton Park, after which he became a professional footballer in January 1920. In October 1920, he made his United debut in a match against Preston North End , in which he helped his team win a dry victory with a score of 1-0. By the 1923/24 season, he became the main goalkeeper of United, and the next season, following which United entered the First Division , he did not miss a single match of the team. In general, from April 1924 to September 1927, the Steward did not play in only 7 championship matches out of a possible 139, after which he lost his place at the gates of the team to Lance Robinson . In April 1928, he regained his place at the gate and played another 149 matches for United before leaving Old Trafford in June 1932, moving to Manchester North End as a playing coach.

At the end of the 1932/33 season, Manchester North End reached the final of the Cheshire League Cup, where he met with the Altringham club, and Steward played for both clubs in it. The final match ended in a draw with a score of 3: 3, and the replay was postponed to the next season. By this time, the Steward moved to Altrinem as a playing coach and played in the replay for the new club. Altrinem won the replay of the final with a score of 4: 1, and later that same season for the first time in history reached the first round of the FA Cup , losing to Gainsborough Trinity club in it. The club also won the Cheshire Grand Cup.

At the end of the 1937/38 season, in which he played only two matches, Steward completed his player career. In May 1938, he became the secretary coach of the Torquay United club, playing in the Third Southern Division. In the 1938/39 season, Torquay finished the championship in 19th place. The steward worked in the club until May 1940, when all football tournaments in England were discontinued due to the war .
