It includes more than 100 species of a rather large size, with an elongated oval tapered body, edged with fin.
Suction cups are equipped with horn rings, but without hooks. There is a well-developed cuttlefish bone and a large ink bag. The body length of some species is up to 50 cm and weight is up to 12 kg.
They live in the warm waters of tropical and subtropical latitudes.
Representatives of the family are objects of commercial fishing. Sepiidae ink has long been used as a paint called sepia .
One of the most famous species is medicinal cuttlefish ( Sepia officinalis Linnaeus ).
