Club career

Manchester United

Higginbotam began his career at the English club Manchester United , but was unable to break into the main team. In 1998, he went on loan to the Belgian club Antwerp . Speaking for the Belgian club, Danny received a one-year suspension for assaulting a football referee. By decision of the Belgian court, the period of his disqualification was reduced to four months. [2]

Derby County

After only four matches for United's main squad, Higginbotham left the team in 2000, moving to Derby County for £ 2 million - a significant amount for the young player at that time. Danny made his debut for Derby County in a match against Southampton, which ended in a draw with the score 2: 2. In the 2000/01 season, Derby avoided relegation from the Premier League. The next season was less successful for the “ rams ”: they flew out of the Premier League, although Higginbotam himself won at the end of the season the “Player of the Year” prize according to the club’s fans.

By the middle of the season, Derby finally lost the chance to compete for a return to the Premier League, and in January 2003, Danny moved to Southampton on loan, and in February signed a permanent contract with the club. In total, as part of the Derby, he spent 86 matches in the Premier League and First Division and scored 3 goals.

Southampton

In January 2003, Higginbotam moved into Southampton Premier League on loan until the end of the 2002/03 season. However, already in February, the leadership of the “ saints ” paid “Derby County” compensation in the amount of £ 1.5 million and the player signed a permanent contract with the club. [3] He took part in the 2002/03 FA Cup matches in which Southampton made it to the finals, but remained on the bench in the final match against Arsenal. After spending two and a half seasons at Southampton, Higginbotam refused to renew the contract with the club and was put up for transfer.

Stoke City

On August 3, 2006, Danny Higginbotham moved to Stoke City for £ 225,000, [4] where he quickly won a regular place in the starting lineup. In a number of cases, he played in the position of the left extreme defender, although he most often played in his favorite position, in the center of defense. In February 2007, he received a captain's armband since the club’s former captain, Michael Dubbury, moved to Reading .

Sunderland

On August 28, 2007, Stoke City accepted Sunderland's offer to transfer the player. [5] The next day, Higginbotam moved to Sunderland for £ 2.5 million and signed a four-year contract with the club. [6]

On November 10, 2007, Higginbotam scored a goal against Newcastle , the principal rivals of the Black Cats . The meeting ended in a draw 1: 1. At the end of the season, Higginbotham left Sunderland, moving to Stoke City, who returned to the Premier League.

Return to Stoke

Higginbotam returned to Stoke, who entered the Premier League, September 1, 2008. Stoke City paid Sunderland £ 2.5 million for the player - exactly the same amount as he received for him a year ago. On October 19, 2008, Higginbotham scored his first goal for Stoke against Tottenham goal. Tottenham's left defender Gareth Bale fouls in the box against the Potters player. Bale received a red card for a foul, and Higginbotam scored a penalty awarded by the judge. Stoke won the match 2-1.

Higginbotam made his way to the main team of Stok, taking a place on the left flank of the defense and, having spent 28 games in the Premier League, helped the club successfully gain a foothold in the league. The ending of the season, however, was missed due to a back injury received in the match against Blackburn. Danny later had surgery. After buying Danny Collins and recovering from injury, Higginbotam lost his place on the field, but by the middle of the season he was able to return to the position of central defender.

On October 24, 2010, the match against Manchester United became the 200th for Higginbotham in the Premier League, Danny's contract was extended for another year, until 2013, despite the fact that he lost his place in the starting lineup of Stoke City. Head coach Tony Pulis noted the role of Higginbotam in the success of the club [7] . Danny in response wilted that he would like to end his career as part of "Stock" [8] .

In the quarterfinal match of the FA Cup, Danny scored a winning goal against West Ham United . A week later, Higginbotam had a similar goal against Newcastle United , but in the next round he was injured in the cruciate ligament of the knee and was eliminated for six months [9] . Thus, Danny again missed the final match of the FA Cup, and his club lost to Manchester City 0-1.

Having recovered from an injury in October 2011, Higginbotam was unable to return to Stoke City. In the end, he went on a semi-annual lease to the Nottingham Forest Championship club, but spent only 6 games for the Reds, having been injured again. Highginbotham began the 12/13 season on lease at Ipswich Town, which was extended later until January. The deal could be extended until the end of the season, but Danny refused, deciding to move closer to home. January 1, 2013 6-month contract with Sheffield United . 6 years spent in Stoke City, Danny Higginbotam called the best of his career [10] .

Sheffield United

Significant role in the transition from Stoke to Sheffield was played by former teammate Danny Dave Kitson. Higginbotam said: "The transition from the Premier League to League 1 is not a problem for me, because I want to play, and not just get paid" [11] . On January 1, Danny Higginbotham made her debut with Sheffield United in a match against Doncaster Rovers .

Chester

On August 29, 2013, Higginbotam joined the Chester National Conference that made it to the National Conference , signing a 1-year contract.

Gibraltar Team

Higginbotam played for the Gibraltar national team , with roots on the maternal side. Allen Boole , appointed head coach of the Gibraltar national team in November 2010, is Danny's uncle. [12] Danny accepted the invitation to the first match of the Gibraltar national team as a member of UEFA. The friendly game against the Slovak national team was held in the Algarve and ended in a draw 0-0, and Higginbotam was recognized as the best player of the meeting [13] .
