Career

Manchester United

Jackie Blanchflower's professional debut for Manchester United took place on November 24, 1951 in a match against Liverpool at Anfield . He won two championship titles with the club: in 1956 and 1957. The teammates gave him the nickname " Reed " (Twiggy). Jackie was known for his versatility: initially he played the role of a striker, but Matt Busby saw in him the skills to choose the right position and fight in the air, so he was transferred to the position of the central midfielder. Jackie has scored 27 goals in his club career. In addition, he played for the national team of Northern Ireland , having spent 12 matches for her.

Munich plane crash

On February 6, 1958, upon the return of the Manchester United team from Belgrade, an airplane with soccer players on board crashed at Munich Airport. 23 people out of 43 passengers on board died. Jackie Blanchflower survived, but received serious injuries: fractures of the pelvic bones, arms and legs, kidney injury; his right hand was almost torn from his body. After treatment, he tried to return to football, but could not fully recover. Doctors forbade him to play football for fear of injuring damaged kidneys, and Jackie soon abandoned his attempts to return to football. Munich air crash put an end to his football career. Jackie was only 24 years old.

Further Life

After leaving football, Jackie tried to work in different places in Manchester , but he was very unlucky with work. He ran a store selling sweets and newspapers, but then a supermarket opened around the corner, because of which he lost all customers. He then worked as a bookmaker , but due to the cold winter of 1963, when Britain had been snowing for several weeks, the races were canceled and Jackie lost his job. In 1967, he became the owner of the pub, but after two weeks, breathalyzers began to be actively used, which led to a decrease in alcohol sales among customers with a driver’s license. He went to work at the printing house, but was removed from his post in 1976.

He trained as a financier and began his career as an accountant , taking a position in the Youth Union of Greater Manchester. He later became an afternoon speaker and regularly delivered afternoon speeches almost until his death in 1998.

Death

On September 2, 1998, Jackie Blanchflower died of cancer at the age of 65. He died the second of the number of players who survived the Munich plane crash (the first died Johnny Berry in 1994) [2] .
