Distribution and Ecology
It grows in North Africa , Western Asia , Southern Europe , the Caucasus , the UK and the Netherlands .
Grows on coastal rocky slopes, rocks, sands.
The fruits contain 0.7-0.8% of essential oil (0.3-0.5% in the vegetative organs). The composition of the essential oil includes thymol , dilapiol and sterol krillin .
Leaves have a pleasant aroma. They are used for the preparation of marinades, pickles, as a seasoning for salads and sauces.
Botanical Description
Perennial bare plant, thick rhizome, branched at the top.
The stem is straight or ascending, 20-50 cm tall, rounded, hollow, finely furrowed.
The leaves are light green, fleshy, lower on the petioles , with the base expanded into the vagina .
Inflorescence is an umbrella with 10-20 rays. The rays of the wrapper are lanceolate, numerous, filmy along the edge. Petals about 1 mm.
Fruits are about 6 mm long.
It blooms in July and August.
