Bilge - a drain in the lower part of the hold on steel vessels , formed by the extreme double bottom sheet and the outer skin . Water flows into the bilge, which is formed during the sweating of the inner surface of the sides , which seeps through the seams of the outer casing, etc. Water is pumped out of the bilge by pumps and is removed overboard through the pipes of the drainage system; usually bilges are covered with lids. The linings for the bottom row of cargo should be laid so as to ensure free flow of water into the bilge. Neglect of this rule often leads to damage to the cargo [1] .
