Biography

Born in Odessa on September 13, 1879 in a noble family.

In 1905 he graduated from Novorossiysk University . He was left at the university in the department of general history to prepare for the master's degree, he passed the master's exam in 1910 .

He was a student of E. N. Shchepkina

In 1912, at St. Petersburg University, he defended his thesis on “Salimbene. Essays on the Italian culture of the 13th century. " After which he becomes a privat-docent, and then an extraordinary professor at Novorossiysk University in Odessa. He taught the history of Western Europe at the Odessa Higher Women's Courses.

In his studies, Bicilli pays particular attention to the spiritual and religious culture, symbolism and hierarchy of medieval man.

In 1920 he emigrated to Serbia , taught at the University of Skopje . The years spent in Skopje are the most unexplored period in the life of a scientist. The only sources about him were recently published in the book by T. N. Galcheva and I. V. Golubovich “Little by little I adapt to“ independent circumstances. ”P. M. Bicilli and the Florovsky family in the first years of emigration" (Sofia: Sun, 2015 ) In 1924, P. M. Bicilli moved to Bulgaria, where he was elected head of the department of modern and contemporary history of Sofia University and for 33 years headed the department of modern history of Western Europe. He was a member of the Russian Academic Union until the dissolution of its branch in Bulgaria on September 9, 1944 . In 1946-1948, three times with his wife he applied for Soviet citizenship, but each time an unmotivated refusal followed. At the end of 1948 after the expiration of the contract with the university prof. Bicilli was released without a pension. He died on August 25, 1953 and was buried in the Russian cemetery in Sofia.
