Mink Fur Scandal

After the Dynamo (Kiev) - Panathinaikos match, on September 20, 1995, UEFA referee Antonio Lopez Nieto stated that he was offered a bribe in the form of two mink coats and $ 30,000. Nieto said that he received this proposal from the general manager of FC Dynamo (Kiev) Igor Surkis and the general secretary of the team Vasily Babiychuk [3] . At a press conference shortly after, Surkis said:

On September 12, 1995, on the eve of the match with Panathinaikos, Babiychuk called him and asked if there were any fur products in his company — they wanted to be bought by Spanish judges. Surkis replied that his company was not engaged in this and asked to call back in a few minutes to make inquiries.

Soon, the general manager found the right product, for which the guests departed that evening. They chose for a long time and, in the end, Nieto took two fur coats, and the side referees Chirino and Giraldes - with a fur hat. The total amount of purchases amounted to 30 thousand dollars. The Spaniards were in a great mood that evening. At dinner, they drank wine, joked. “My kidney cramps started and I had to leave the banquet hall,” Surkis recalled. “After some time, Babiychuk came to me and said that the judges all the time asked what the cost of the selected fur products was.” When Nieto saw the numbers on the check, he grabbed his head: "We do not need anything, no souvenirs, no paintings, take everything back ..." [3]

As a result, by the decision of the UEFA disciplinary commission, the results of the match, Dynamo (Kiev) - Panathinaikos were canceled, and the team itself was disqualified from the UEFA Champions League , in the rally the team was replaced by Danish Aalborg . Also, the team was deprived of the opportunity for three years to participate in matches held under the auspices of UEFA. Igor Surkis and Vasily Babiychuk were disqualified for life [4] .
